News Report
Cardiff City v Brighton and Hove Albion
(11th Nov 2008 03:16 PM)
Article by:
Zoe Mendham
Cardiff City Ladies succeeded in the league double over Brighton & Hove Albion after scoring two goals with no reply in very blustery and bleak conditions at the Cardiff International Stadium.
Although half chances fell to both teams in the first half hour of the match, neither keeper was really troubled until on 31 minutes Laurie Harries’ shot crept passed the out stretched arm of Stacey Parkinson the Brighton keeper and spun over the line. Brighton thought that they had cleared their lines but the referees’ assistant signalled that the ball had crossed the line.
This goal was what the game really needed and both teams then had better efforts, including a Sophie Ingle shot that went just wide of the Brighton upright, followed by two Brighton corners in quick succession which were both headed wide of the target.
Brighton were unlucky not to equalise just before half time when none of the visitors were able to convert a low cross from the right flank and Cardiff took a very slender lead into the break.
The opening minutes of the second half belonged to Cardiff as they came out more purposeful and peppered the Brighton goal with shots, but they couldn’t make their chances count for anything. Harries was unable to double her tally when a great effort again went inches wide.
On 56 minutes Cardiff Captain, Charlotte Miller, put in a tremendously accurate cross for Ingle to head home passed the despairing dive of Parkinson in the Brighton goal.
In the 63rd minute, Cardiff replaced Chantelle Miller for striker, Zoe Atkins.
Shortly afterwards, referee Mark Dyson booked Charlotte Miller and Brighton’s Carly Esposito for dissent, followed by Natasha Harding for a late tackle. Brighton were unable to make the most of the free kicks awarded to them.
Cardiff made another change in the 80th minute when Kirsty Lewis replaced goal scorer Ingle.
Harries had the chance to put the game beyond Brighton when she only had the keeper to beat, only to see her shot go hopelessly high and wide of the goal.
With West Ham being beaten 1-0 at home by league leaders Charlton Athletic, Cardiff now move up into second place, although there are a few teams not far behind them that have games in hand.
After the game Cardiff Manager, Michele Adams said, “The difficult, blustery conditions played a part in this match and we weren’t able to play our usual game, but I’m pleased that we took all three points and kept another clean sheet.”
Cardiff City Ladies take a break from league action next Sunday, 16th November, when they start the 6th defence of their FAW Challenge Cup title against Porthcawl Athletic, at Rest Bay Sports Ground, Rest Bay, Porthcawl. Kick off will be at 2.00pm.
