News Report
Cardiff City v Porthcawl Town
(19th Nov 2008 03:38 PM)
Article by:
Zoe Mendham
Cardiff City Ladies started the 6th successive defence of the FAW Challenge Cup title with an emphatic 12-1 win over an inexperienced but plucky Porthcawl Town, who played throughout with enthusiasm.
Porthcawl struggled with the pace and fitness of seven-times champions, Cardiff, from the opening minutes but brave goalkeeping from Porthcawl keeper, Rebecca Smith, prevented Laurie Harries from getting her name on the score sheet in the first few minutes.
Cardiff camped in the Porthcawl half for the first ten minutes and were rewarded with the opening goal from Zoe Atkins after a pinpoint cross from Natasha Harding.
Porthcawl were unable to contain the pace and guile of Harding on the left hand side and, three minutes later she set up defender Aimee Lea for the second.
Harding then got on the score sheet herself as her in-swinging corner flew into the top right corner of the net.
On 21 minutes a rasping shot from Danielle Broadhurst clattered the crossbar but Atkins was on hand to slot the rebound passed Smith for her second and Cardiff’s fourth goal.
Harding then got her second after a mazy run through the Porthcawl defence and fired low passed the despairing dive of Smith.
Harding completed her hat trick just before half time when Broadhurst set up a neat pass for her to make no mistake for Cardiff’s sixth goal before the break.
Cardiff made some changes at half time with Jordan Frayne replacing Harding, and Carla Parfitt coming on for Harries. Marie Barrow moved forward from defence and straight away got on the goal trail as she headed home a 53rd minute corner.
This was followed shortly after with Cardiff’s eighth and Lea’s second of the game.
Lea then turned provider when she put through a perfectly weighted pass for Parfitt to coolly slot passed the oncoming Smith.
On 75 minutes it was Porthcawl who had the loudest cheer when Jessica Parrott converted an unstoppable free kick.
But it wasn’t long before Lea completed her hat trick to take Cardiff into double figures, followed by a Sophie Ingle goal to make it 11.
Cardiff midfielder, Sam Jones, who had worked hard all game, then set up Barrow, whose header came back off the crossbar. Again it was Atkins who was first to react and score her hat trick and the cup holders’ twelfth as the final whistle was blown.
Cardiff are back in league action next Sunday, 23rd November when they entertain Portsmouth Ladies at the Cardiff International Athletic Stadium. Kick off will be 2.00pm.
