News Report
Cardiff City v Portsmouth
(24th Nov 2008 08:20 AM)
Article by:
Zoe Mendham
Prior to the start of this game, Cardiff City Ladies were lying second in the FA Tesco Womens Premier League, Southern Division, with Portsmouth Ladies only two points behind but with three games in hand. By the end of this enthralling match both teams deserved a share of the points in a 2-2 draw.
With Cardiff Captain, Charlotte Miller ruled out through injury, the armband was worn by Marie Barrow. Within six minutes she was making a goal-saving tackle in the box to deny the visitors an early lead.
Cardiff replied immediately when, on the break, Laurie Harries skipped over several despairing Portsmouth tackles and laid on an inch perfect pass to Carla Parfitt who put the ball agonisingly wide of the post.
But it was Portsmouth who broke the deadlock in the 14th minute when Becky Miles shot passed Cardiff keeper, Rhian Nokes, to put the visitors’ one up.
In the 28th minute Harries had the chance to level the score when a dangerous cross from Sam Jones glanced off her head and crept the wrong side of the post.
Six minutes later, Cardiff keeper, Nokes, managed to block a shot after a scramble in the goal mouth. The ball rebounded to a Portsmouth player whose shot was fired through a melee of players only to see Barrow clear off the line.
Portsmouth took a slender lead into the break but were unaware of the drama that was to unfold in the second forty five minutes.
Both teams had early chances at the start of the second half but it was Cardiff who looked the more likely to score. They were determined to avenge Portsmouth for the 4-1 loss suffered in Portsmouth back in September.
The Portsmouth keeper prevented Jordan Frayne from levelling when she gathered her long distance effort in safely.
In the 63rd minute Cardiff drew level when a sweetly struck free kick by Jones from 20 yards out, flew over the head of the Portsmouth keeper and into the roof of the net.
Five minutes later Cardiff’s confidence was showing and Portsmouth’s defence showed signs of panic. Zoe Atkins slipped a ball into the path of the oncoming Harries, who blasted her shot low passed the Portsmouth keeper and into the back of the net, giving the Cardiff girls a deserved lead.
Nokes then pulled off a tremendous save when a Portsmouth striker found herself in front of goal. The ball struck Nokes’ outstretched leg and went out for a corner which came to nothing.
Parfitt was unlucky not to have her cheeky chipped effort from 30 yards out creep in at the far post. Instead, it landed harmlessly on top of the net.
With only ten minutes to go, Cardiff’s defence was breeched when a deep cross from the right swung dangerously in front of Nokes, with Amie Swallow making contact before any Cardiff player, and her shot was good enough to bring the Portsmouth team level.
The last chance for either team to take all three points fell to Cardiff’s Parfitt, who struck her shot well, but straight into the grateful keepers’ arms.
On 84 minutes Cardiff made a change, bringing on Charlotte Preen for Atkins, but, despite the fresh legs up front, were unable to add to the score line, and the points were shared.
This match turned out to be a tremendous advert for women’s’ football and was played in a very competitive manner. Both teams were a credit to the sport.
Cardiff’s next game will be away to league leaders Charlton Athletic on Sunday 30th November. Kick off 2.00pm. Their next home game will be a week later, 7th December against Colchester United.
