News Report
Cardiff City v Colchester United

Cardiff City Ladies, second in the FA Tesco Womens Premier League, Southern Division, dropped valuable home points in a closely fought match against Colchester United, drawing 2-2 at the International Sports Stadium, Leckwith.
Cardiff opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Laurie Harries burst down the right wing and crossed into the box, where Natasha Harding was on hand to poke the ball home from only a few yards out.
Colchester responded almost immediately when a free kick on the edge of the box was swung dangerously in towards goal, only to see defender Lauren Townsend head the ball clear off the goal line.
A series of Cardiff corners didn’t even manage to hit the target, with the best chance falling to Sam Jones, who fired her shot high over the cross bar.
The home team then survived a very close call when Colchester midfielder, Kat Nutman, rounded Cardiff keeper, Rhian Nokes, but was unable to slot the ball home at such a tight angle.
Colchester equalised in the 35th minute when a defensive error allowed their forward to cross the ball over from the right hand side and Helen Bass had the easiest of jobs to hit the ball into the back of the net.
The opening minutes of the second half were end to end, with Cardiff midfielder Jordan Frayne squandering the best chance as her shot went over the bar.
On the hour Cardiff were denied the chance to take the lead when Harries set up Captain, Charlotte Miller, whose shot was well held by Colchester keeper, Nikitta Runnacles.
Then it was Colchester’s turn to throw away an opportunity when Nokes lost her footing as she ran out to block a shot. The Colchester striker was forced wide but there was nobody to get onto her low cross right across the face of the goal.
On 70 minutes Cardiff again took the lead when Harries flicked on a Harding throw in, and Nutman was helpless to prevent the ball from hitting her and directing it into the back of her own the net.
Three minutes later, Frayne conceded a dubious free kick outside the Cardiff box, which resulted in Colchesters’ Hannah Porter heading home another equaliser.
With fifteen minutes left Cardiff made changes, with Frayne making way for debutant Rachel Cullen, and Sophie Ingle being replaced by Zoe Atkins. Despite the fresh legs, they were unable to improve on the 2-2 score line and Colchester returned to East Anglia probably the happier of the two sides.
Next Sunday, 14th December, Cardiff City Ladies are in cup action when they host Keynsham Town in the 3rd Round of the FA Tescos Womens Cup. Kick off at the International Sports Stadium, Leckwith, will be at 2.00pm.
