News Report
Cardiff City v Keynsham Town

It took a penalty shoot out to separate Premier women’s league sides Cardiff City LFC and Keynsham Town in an enthralling, eventful and exciting FA Cup tie which Cardiff eventually won 5-4 on penalties at Cardiff International Sports Stadium on Sunday.
Cardiff who reached last seasons quarter final, took on local rivals Keynsham Town in this seasons 3rd round tie, with the advantage of having won 3-1 in a league fixture a couple of months ago. But in Sundays tie Keynsham started the brighter and for the first 20 minutes peppered shots at the Cardiff goal, but could not break down a stubborn and resilient Cardiff defence. Central defender Lauren Townsend alongside Amie Lea and Carla Parfitt denied Keynshams forwards with fine tackling and inspiring confidence throughout the side. Goalkeeper Rhian Nokes was called into action early on with an excellent point blank save from lively striker Ana Bruni .
Cardiffs efforts were reduced to half chances with Zoe Atkins and Sam Jones both hitting weak shots that didn’t worry Keynsham keeper Tanja Andjelkovic.
The match livened up when Keynshams Helen Bleazard was upended by Lea on the edge of the box after a mazy run with Lea picking up a yellow card for the tackle. But Bleazard fired high and wide from the resulting free kick.
Cardiff’s fortunes changed on the 34th minute with a splendidly hit free kick from Natasha Harding 20 yards out that had Andjelkovic scrambling across goal but she could only watch as the ball rocketed into the top right hand corner and gave the home side a 1-0 lead.
The goal gave Cardiff a confidence rush as they began playing with more purpose and zest and it was their turn to blitz the goalmouth, with efforts from Jordan Frayne, Jones and Atkins. A muddle in the Keynsham defence almost led to a goal when Atkins’ cheeky chip almost outwitted Andjelkovic. Cardiff turned to skipper Charlotte Miller and Sophie Ingle to dominate the heart of the midfield and they didn’t disappoint as they battled for midfield supremacy.
The last effort of the half fell to Keynsham striker Luciana Silva but again Nokes was in fine form as she tipped the ball over the crossbar to send the home side in at half time leading 1-0 .
The second half was as eventful as the first when Frayne having picked up a yellow card earlier in the game collected another for dissent and was dismissed on 60 minutes. This was a turning point in the match, as Cardiff lost their momentum as the visitors piled forward in search of the equaliser and despite a brave goaline clearance from Lea, Bruni a shot through a melee of players to score the equaliser in the 82nd minute and take the game into extra time.
Atkins who had run her socks off upfront for Cardiff was replaced by Danielle Broadhurst to give fresh impetus, this change almost paid off when her shot on target was well held by Andjelkovic.
Both sides cagey not to concede the winning goal, battled hard with several half chances at both ends and a late goaline clearance by Cardiff’s Laurie Harries, brought the game to a close and into a penalty shoot.
Cardiff scored every spot kick with Chantelle Miller, Harding, Broadhurst and Townsend all holding their nerve and put pressure on the Keynsham side. Ironically it was ex Cardiff defender Dana Hinton who failed to convert her penalty kick for the visitors as she hit the ball wide of the mark, with Nokes clawing away the last Keynsham kick to send the Welsh side into the 4th round to face either Leeds City Vixens or Sunderland away on the 4th January.
Cardiff are back to Premier League action this coming Sunday 21st December at home to Millwall 2pm kick off at Cardiff International Stadium, Leckwith.
