News Report
Cardiff City v Sunderland
(12th Jan 2009 05:10 PM)
Article by:
Zoe Mendham
After overcoming Keynsham Town in the previous round of the FA Womens’ Cup, Cardiff City Ladies made the long haul to the north-east for their fourth round tie against Sunderland Ladies, but came home empty handed, losing 4-1.
The ‘Black Cats’ made their intentions clear in the opening minutes, looking much the brighter team, with the City girls sluggish and off the pace.
They had a fine chance to take an early lead when a pin point cross from Lucy Stainforth found Natalie Gutheridge in the box, but she was unable to guide her header towards the goal.
Cardiff’s best chance fell to Jordan Frayne when she managed a shot on the Sunderland goal, but it was straight into the grateful arms of keeper, Helen Alderson.
The Cardiff defence were stubborn and held firm, preventing the Sunderland attacks from breaking through. Stainforth and Gutheridge linked up again but this time Gutheridges’ effort flew off the post.
Sunderland broke the deadlock on the half hour when the persistent Gutheridge headed home passed the despairing dive of Cardiff keeper Rhian Nokes.
Cardiff picked up the pace in an effort to find the equaliser and were unlucky when a well worked corner saw Amie Lea’s header cleared off the line.
Stainforth then hit the woodwork for Sunderland just before they delivered the sucker punch, when Sophie Williams fired home their second as the referee blew the whistle for half time.
Cardiff manager, Michele Adams, made a half time substitution, replacing Channy Miller for debutant, Kelly Newcombe, making her debut in the heart of midfield, having transferred from Swansea Ladies.
Cardiff set the pace at the start the second half, looking livelier for the first ten minutes. Danielle Broadhurst had a great effort tipped over the bar by Alderson, and, from the resulting corner, Broadhurst shot over.
Gutheridge, desperately looking for her second goal, again headed onto the bar and over.
On 75 minutes Cardif pulled a deserved goal back when Alderson made a brave save on the edge of box, at the feet of Zoe Atkins, but she was unable to hold on to the ball. Atkins blasted the ball, left-footed, through a melee of players, into the back of the net.
It made for a frantic last quarter of an hour, when, in typical cup fashion, Cardiff pressed for the equaliser and Sunderland pushed to make the game safe.
Sunderland forced Cardiff keeper, Nokes, into a strong, one handed, diving save. But her efforts were all in vain when, with only two minutes left, Gutheridge managed to score her second after heading home a shot from Kelly McDougall, which had rebounded nicely to her off the bar.
Cardiff’s fate was signed and sealed in the last minute of the game when Nicola Devine scored Sunderland’s’ fourth, and a ticket into the fifth round.
Cardiff have a break next Sunday as their home fixture against Barnet, on 11th January, has been cancelled due to Barnet playing a cup game. Their next fixture will be at the National Sports Stadium, Leckwith, on Sunday 18th, when they entertain Truro City Ladies. Kick off is at 2.00pm.
