News Report
Cardiff City v Truro City
(19th Jan 2009 04:00 PM)
Article by:
Zoe Mendham
Cardiff City Ladies were dealt a severe blow to their promotion hopes when they went down 2-0 at home to bottom team Truro City in a game where they were unable to convert any chances in front of goal.
The problems started when regular Cardiff goalkeeper, Rhian Nokes, was out due to illness, and, without a replacement keeper on the bench, she was replaced by Terri Beddows, who has recently returned to the club from the USA.
The opening minutes started promisingly for the home side. Cardiff’s play was bright, with youngsters Zoe Atkins and Danielle Broadhurst linking well up front. After just five minutes they threatened the Truro goal when Charlotte Miller nipped in behind the Truro defence and set up Broadhurst whose fine effort went agonisingly over the cross bar.
On twenty minutes, totally against the run of play, Truro scored when the Cardiff defence needlessly gave away a free kick on the edge of the box. Danni Barr accepted the chance gratefully and headed the ball home passed the stand-in keeper, Beddows.
Three minutes later, before Cardiff could regroup, they found themselves another goal down when Truro’s Lianne Lapham, looking suspiciously in an offside position, found herself in front goal and with the easy task of slotting home passed the despairing dive of Beddows.
After 30 minutes Cardiff were forced to make a change when Jordan Frayne suffered a knee injury and was replaced by Rachel Cullen.
The second half was as frustrating as the first for Cardiff. As they piled on the pressure, the Truro defence remained organised and stubborn.
Cardiff defender, Lauren Townsend, sent in a trio of dangerous free kicks that threatened the Truro goal but were well dealt with by their keeper, Carly Barber.
Cardiff had a series of corner kicks but their chances failed to penetrate the visitors defence.
Just before the final whistle, Atkins had a well struck shot well saved by Barber, but the Cardiff girls ended up empty handed, unable to get anything from the stubborn Cornish team. The home side were left to lick their wounds after a lack lustre performance in front of goal.
Cardiff are without a game next Sunday, 25th January, but are back in action at the International Sports Stadium, Leckwith on Sunday 1st February, when they entertain Crystal Palace Ladies. Kick off will be at 2.00pm.
