U14's v Caerau (7th December 2008)

A real taste of winter brought freezing conditions and a difficult pitch, which Cardiff braved to run out comfortable 4-0 winners. The score line was restricted by generous finishing, an excellent home goalkeeping performance, and opponents who remained organised and motivated until the end – on a day when it would have been easy to excuse capitulation as the changing rooms beckoned.
The first quarter gave an accurate pointer for the whole game, with Cardiff pressing hard but failing to convert chances. Chanelle broke through forcing the keeper to block and a cross from Corin flashed across the 6-yard box failing to find the simple finish required.
The pattern continued with a series of half-chances for Cardiff, and occasional home attacks being defended well, giving little to keep Charlie warm in the Cardiff goal.
Eventually the pressure had to tell and Taylor scored from a Chanelle through ball.
The game continued to be played in the Caerau half with a number of chances coming and going up to half-time; Kelly fired over from a corner kick; the home keeper saved after a twisting run and shot from Jess, and then similarly from Kelly and Corin.
As the temperature dropped and mist began to close-in, the second half began in the same vane with Cardiff continuing to shoot too close to the keeper until Corin seized on a ball bobbling in the 6-yard box to make it 2-0.
Chanelle quickly added the third and it seemed that more would follow rapidly, but the home goalie kept up her strong performance and Cardiff lacked the clinical edge to capitalise on a number of good situations.
Any home attacks were cut short by a well organised Cardiff defence.
Sustained pressure again told as Kelly added the fourth in a goal mouth scramble.
There was still time for Charlie (playing centre forward in the second half) to hit the inside of the post, and the home keeper to cap a ‘man of the match’ performance with further saves from Taylor and Kelly.
The final whistle signalled 3 points for Cardiff and a rapid exit for the warmth of the changing rooms.
