Cardiff City’s U14’s christened their new home pitch in St Mellons, with an emphatic victory in this cup quarter final. A tight game was expected and it began with early pressure from the visitors, Penydarren, with the first 5 minutes being played in the Cardiff defensive third.
Having resisted the opening push, Cardiff came into the game and, from midfield, the ball broke to Taylor who beat the goalkeeper to the ball but angled the finish just wide. Now Cardiff began to apply pressure and another chance fell to Holly who pushed it past the post.
The deadlock was broken when Kelly’s well delivered free kick was met by a fine header from Holly which gave the keeper no chance.
The game continued to be tight but Cardiff broke free for two nil when a ball out of defence set Taylor clear to beat the goalkeeper.
A scrappy third came when Holly poked home after a defensive mix up.
Cardiff were now in control and another break saw Channelle shoot narrowly wide.
The pressure continued with Corin forcing a corner and Kelly cutting in from the flank shooting but not troubling the keeper.
The fourth came with the goal of the game, Kelly broke from midfield controlled well and finished beautifully to effectively win the tie.
Just before half-time the visitors were handed some hope with a harsh penalty decision. The spot kick was well struck but off the mark, and the half closed.
The second half began with a scrappy period of play. Quality came when Jess made a fine run from inside her own half, beating players to the edge of the area but the shot was saved. Cardiff then began to play and forced a corner which flashed across goal, followed by a drive from Kelly.
Penydarren pressed for a goal but the Cardiff defence and keeper dealt well with the occasional breaks.
At the other end a fine move on the left ended with Corin hitting the inside of the post.
The second half continued to be quiet with the game effectively won in the first half, but was lit up by a fine passing move with Kelly’s ball setting Corin free for a decisive finish.
Corin had an appetite now and again broke free from a ball out of defence but her shot squeaked narrowly wide of the post.
There was late tension when a back pass produced an indirect free kick, but even twice taken it came to nothing and the game fizzled out and Cardiff progress to the semi final.
