U16's v Maerdy in the Tesco Cup
(30th Jan 2009 10:03 AM)

This was always going to be a tall order for our side, as we were already 3-0 down from the first leg. We had a chat about how we were going to set our stall out and change a few things.
We started brightly and Jamie, our keeper, pulled off a great save from Maerdys’ centre forward, who gave us a hard time at the back. Then the warning signs kicked in and it was evident that we needed to pull everything together and start to pass the ball around.
Then the bullet hit us, with a well taken goal by their centre forward. We pushed forward in reply but everything seemed to be going against us. If there was a day we needed some luck it was today. We were playing some lovely football but it does not win games, we had to score.
We came in at half time 2 nil down, then it was time for the coaches to give them a talking. Well, if you think all Les did was talk you got it all wrong: the girls don’t call her ‘Les Leno’ for nothing!
Changes were made, and what a different team that started the second half. Maerdy were on the back foot and we scored a well earned goal. Then, believe it or not, we drew level, and the come back was on. We were playing more like our old selves, with belief and determination.
We started to tackle and give all we had but Maerdy spoilt the party and scored a third. They thought Cardiff would lie down and die but it was not to be. We scored another equaliser, bringing the final score to 3-3.
Cardiff pushed for more goals, but it was a big ask of the girls, and ‘mother luck’ was not on our side. Despite a 6-3 aggregate score it was a tremendous effort and a very exciting match. Coaches, Kerry, Les, Matt and Joe were pleased with the result!
Coach Les Judd said, after the game, “We could not have done any more and we are very proud of the girls on this performance. It was a great improvement on the first leg match. The learning curve for the girls is that you make luck and never ever give in until the fat lady sings.”
