News Report
Cardiff City v Millwall Lionesses
(4th Feb 2009 09:18 AM)
Article by:
Zoe Mendham
With no first team match this weekend, our Reserves took advantage of the opportunity of playing at Cardiff International Stadium and put in a fine performance to take all three points against Millwall Lionnesses Reserves.
The Cardiff girls looked lively and confident despite having not played so far this year, as they put in a great display in an entertaining game.
From the kick off Cardiff looked comfortable and in control with Cori Williams and Captain Fern Burrage linking well up front. On 20 minutes Cardiff broke the deadlock when a fierce shot from Ellie Davies was blocked and Burrage pounced on the rebound to give the Welsh girls a deserved lead.
Millwall looked threatening on the break, and from a defensive mix up in the Cardiff defence they equalised just before the break.
The second half was all Cardiff as they took the lead on 55 minutes with a well drilled strike from Williams.
Striker Gemma Lewis got on the score sheet 10 minutes later with a mazy run out on the right hand side and an angled shot that was driven away from the despairing dive of the Millwall keeper.
The Lionnesses fought to keep in the game but could not beat a well marshalled Cardiff defence and keeper Sophie Dando was on form, pulling off a string of fine saves.
Ellie Davies rounded the scoring off for Cardiff with a well taken goal and a well earned three points, which takes them off the bottom of the table.
Next Sunday, 8th February, Cardiff City Ladies play away to Barnet in the Women’s Premier Southern Division, weather permitting. Please keep an eye on the website as there is a possibility that this may be postponed due to the snow around the country.
