Cardiff City v Loughor Rovers

CARDIFF City Ladies FC cruised into the fourth round of the Welsh Cup after thrashing Loughor Rovers 8-0 at Cardiff International Sports Stadium.
City, who took the lead through Zoe Atkins in the first half, were 3-0 up by half-time and managed to add a further five goals before the final whistle. Speaking after the game City captain, Charlotte Miller, expressed her satisfaction with her teams performance and paid tribute to Loughor’s dogged display.
She said: “We didn’t know much about them but we didn’t take the game lightly”. City’s Head Coach, Michele Adams, echoed this sentiment prior to kick off. She said: “We’ve made a lot of changes to give some kids 90 minutes of first team football.” adding: “It’s their [Loughor] cup final, we have to respect them.”
If City’s ladies were keen to show respect they certainly showed little mercy towards their second division opponents. City started brightly and soon began probing the Rover’s defence with Kelly Newcombe testing Rover’s keeper, Emma Gunning, barely nine minutes into the match.
City continued to press, particularly down the right of the field, with Rachel Cullen giving her opposite number a torrid time. Rovers were presented with an opportunity to take the lead on 16 minutes when City keeper Rhian Nokes failed to clear her area leaving Rovers’ shot to ricochet off the far post.
The crowd could clearly sense a goal was coming and on 21 minutes Zoe Atkins confirmed their suspicions by neatly lobbing Gunning to make it 1-0 to City. Danielle Broadhurst then doubled City’s lead two minutes later after heading in from close range.
Loughor started to look nervous at the back as City continued to press for more goals. Gunning did well to save a close range shot before Rebecca Mullins again struck the woodwork for Rovers. A direct free kick taken by City late in first half however put the Cardiff Ladies further ahead. After skilfully clearing their opponents’ wall, Broadhurst fired home from close range after Gunning spilled her save.
City’s dominance continued into the second half with a right-footed strike by Natasha Harding and a long-range effort by Sophie Ingle making it 5-0 in quick succession. Harding nearly got a second minutes later after Gunning parried her shot leaving Ellie Davies to finish off from close range. By now the game was well and truly over for Rovers, but the visitors continued to show tenacity in clearing City balls from their area. It wasn’t enough however to stop Rachel Cullen and Davies getting her brace adding two more goals before the game was up sealing an emphatic 8-0 victory.
The result sees cup-holders Cardiff City Ladies progress to the fourth round as they look to retain the trophy for the seventh year in a row. Victory in the cup would allow the South Wales side to qualify for Europe as part of the UEFA womens cup.
