News Report
Cardiff City v West Ham United

It was West Ham who came out on top in this very entertaining game, against a hard working Cardiff team who eventually went down 3-2 and remain in fourth position in the FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division.
Cardiff started the livelier of the two sides and within minutes Nicola Cousins set out her stall in midfield, putting in a strong tackle and winning the ball. Captain Charlotte Miller then played the ball behind the West Ham defence but Natasha Harding was judged to be offside as she slotted the ball home.
West Ham were then awarded a free kick but Cardiff keeper, Rhian Nokes, was equal to the resulting shot, gathering the ball at her near post.
Amie Lea then put Harding through on goal but, from only two yards out, blasted her shot into the grateful arms of the West Ham keeper.
Cardiff forward, Laurie Harries, put the West Ham defence under pressure when she pounced on a misjudged back pass, only to see her shot go narrowly wide of the post.
It was the Londoners who broke the deadlock on 41 minutes, when Samantha Pittuck’s shot hit the post and Lindsey Morgan was on hand to slot home the rebound from close range.
Cardiff replied on the stroke of half time when Lauren Townsend swung a dangerous free kick into the West Ham box. Terri Beddows was at the far post ready to score but a Hammers defender attempted to cut out the cross, only to see the ball hit the back of her own net.
Within eight minutes of the restart, following indiscipline in the Cardiff midfield, West Ham were awarded a free kick. They were spectacularly punished with an unstoppable shot from Jess Barling, which flew into the net from 25 yards out.
Harries continued to pressure the West Ham defence, stealing the ball but her shot again went wide of the target.
Sam Pittuck made it three for West Ham when the Cardiff defence failed to clear their lines. There was a melee in front of Nokes and Pittuck managed to take the ball around Nokes and into the net.
Cardiff laid siege to the West Ham goal but several Townsend free kicks came to nothing when, firstly, Cousins controlled the ball and slipped Harding through, only to see the shot go wide again, and then Townsend tried her luck with a direct kick, which went over the bar.
Their pressure was rewarded on 75 minutes when Cousins put Zoe Atkins through. She managed to hold off one defender, then round another, before slotting the ball home in the bottom left corner of the West Ham goal, passed the despairing dive of the keeper.
This made for a very exciting finish to the match but it was West Hams’ Julia Setford who had the last chance only to see her header hit the cross bar.
After the match, Cardiff manager, Michele Adams said, “Although it was a very close, entertaining game, which could have gone either way, we threw our chances away at the beginning. If we had put them away it would have changed the colour of the game, but it was ill discipline that cost us in the end.”
Next Sunday Cardiff City Ladies travel to league leaders, Charlton Athletic, whilst the Reserves are at home to Bristol Academy Reserves at the University Playing Fields, Llanrumney. Both games kick off at 2.00pm.
