News Report
U16's v Trefelin
(24th Feb 2009 03:14 PM)
Article by:
Zoe Mendham
This was always going to be a hard game for the U16’s even with home advantage. But a 2-0 scoreline was well deserved.
We started brightly and seemed to be carrying on from our last fixture at home.
The girls had been told to push hard from the start instead of allowing Trefelin to command from the start and play catch-up in the second half.
At training on Friday we did some work on holding the ball up, and using our bodies to shield the ball from the opposition. The girls managed to put it into practice and proved that it worked. Well done girls.
Gemma got our first goal to give us a well-deserved lead. This gave us confidence to take control of the game in the middle of the park, with our new signing Lorriane, and Racheal working hard. Ceri was doing lots of runs down the wing too, and our young midfield Jenna was making a good connection with Gemma out wide.
Lisa’s mission this week was not to let the defence carry the ball out and work 100% in the front but she was disappointed that she never scored. However, she worked hard for her team mates by pinning the Trefelin defence in their own box.
Our defence, from Captain Alex and Chloe, seemed to work well with Charlotte and Liz. The tackles that they were putting in were the best I have seen all season.
Jamie, our keeper, made some good saves when we conceded free kicks, and her clearing kicks from out of the box were brilliant! This is just one cool keeper.
Then Gemma scored again with a deflection off a Trefelin defender. We always looked in control of this top of a table clash and it was just great to watch.
The subs were brought on in the second half. Old hands, Chopper and Emma, joined the game and we continued to play the ball around and keep possession. Taylor came on to the wing and put some excellent crosses into the box.
Team coaches, Joe, Matt, Les and Kerry were extremely pleased with the result and, more importantly, the girls had a great day and performed well. Let’s hope that this carries on to the Welsh Cup Semi Final next Sunday.
Today’s Player of the Day goes to both Loriane and Rachael, who never stopped working throughout the game. Their tackles and headers were tremendous and they worked so well together.
Good luck to Loriane with the Welsh U17s in a few weeks time. She joins our passed players Zoe and Danielle, who are now playing for the seniors. Good luck to you all.
Report by Les, Matt, Joe and Kerry.
