U16's through to defend Welsh Cup Title U16's through to defend Welsh Cup Title (25th Feb 2009 03:24 PM)
Article by: Zoe Mendham

The U16’s Welsh Cup semi final was to be played on neutral ground in Aberdare, home to two Cardiff players, Alex and Kath. Cup holders, Cardiff were up against last years beaten finalists, Llanidloes. It was a penalty in extra time that won the game and the holders are again through to defend their title.

Being the Cup Holders was pressure in it self for Cardiff, plus Llanidloes were out for revenge following last years final.

The game started well with Cardiff pushing the ball around nicely but not really creating a shot on goal. Llanidloes were getting more confident as time went on.
It appeared that they had come with a game plan to upset our flowing football and we started to get edgy. But they never seemed like they were ever going to get a goal.

Our keeper, Jamie, was kicking extremely well and only had to make one save in the first half. This was because both teams were breaking play up in the middle of the park.

The tackles from Racheal, Lorraine, Ceri and Emma were out of this world.
Our back four of Alex, Chloe, Charlotte and Lizzie just seemed to be controlling everything and moving the ball around well. Although Lisa and Gemma up front just could not break down the Llanidioes defence.

All even at half time and the second half seemed better but still no goals! The Cardiff girls were playing better than the first half and that’s all we could ask.

Shortly after the restart Cardiff brought on a new signing Abbie. She dribbled well with the ball down the wing and looked quite at home with the ball at her feet.

The rest of the substitutes were being kept for extra time for fresh legs and all subs could fit into any roll.

Sure enough, without a goal scored between two competitive teams, extra time arrived. Cardiff were still looking bright and fit. All that fitness in the summer proved its worth!

Chopper joined the fray at the back and Kath went up front with more fresh legs. And it seemed to work .

Then Lisa was brought down in the Llanidloes penalty area. Lorraine stepped up and, despite the pressure, calmly slotted the ball into the net to score what turned out to be the winner. Apparently coach Les jumped so high in her excitement that she slipped on her studs and fell, bruising her elbow. Kerry AND Joe looked happy too.

We had broken Lllanidloes’ hearts and they started going down with cramp. They had given all they could and we just pushed the ball around to play time out.

What a great day and Cardiff City Ladies U16’s are on their way to the final of the Welsh Cup to defend their title.

Player of the Day was Emma, Alex and Lorraine. They worked so hard all day and the belief was there that we were never going to lose.
