News Report
Charlton Athletic v Cardiff City Ladies
(3rd Mar 2009 10:51 AM)
Article by:
Karen Jones
Honours were even in a hard fought and entertaining top of the table clash when Cardiff City Ladies travelled to London and earned themselves a deserved point against runaway league leaders Charlton Athletic in the FA Tesco Premier League Southern Division.
The opening minutes saw similar attacks from both teams. Firstly, Cardiff’s Laurie Harries was unable to connect with a perfect cross from Jordan Frayne, followed by Charlton’s Kim Holden missing a similar chance from a cross by full back Jenny Moore.
Cardiff goalkeeper, Rhian Nokes, who was outstanding throughout, was then called upon to make a save with her feet from an effort from Holden, who, herself had a very lively game.
Cardiff were unlucky not to take the lead when Nicola Cousins’ header was cleared off the Charlton line from a corner.
Nokes then made a dramatic double save from both Danielle Farmer and Natalie Crinian to keep Cardiff in the game.
On 38 minutes it was the visitors that took a deserved lead when Natasha Harding’s cross field pass opened up the Charlton defence and Harries drove the ball passed the Becky Musial in the Charlton goal from just inside the box.
This instilled confidence into the Cardiff players and they were in control of the game up to the half time whistle.
Charlton came out from the break with determination and caught the Cardiff defence napping. From a corner, Nokes was called upon to make a tremendous reflex save to preserve the Cardiff lead.
But in the 56th minute the Addicks got the equaliser when the ball went wide and the defence pushed up for offside. As they held their line, Crinian was given the benefit of being onside when she broke through and had the simple task of slotting the ball passed Nokes, levelling the score.
Charlton were now taking control but they were unable to beat Nokes again, this time punching the ball clear from a corner which Charltons Captain, Kimberley Dixson, latched onto and was unlucky not to give her team the lead when a rasping shot went inches wide of the post.
Cardiff responded by winning a corner. Harding swung the ball in and Terri Beddows rose above the Charlton defence she couldn’t direct her header and it landed in the grateful arms of the keeper, Musial.
Cardiff forwards, Harding and Harries linked well throughout the game and a well weighted pass put Cousins in on goal, but Musial made a fine save.
It was the Welsh girls who had the last chance to take all three points in this evenly matched game, when Captain, Charlotte Miller put Harries through. She rounded the keeper but it was such an acute angle that the ball went agonisingly wide of the far post, and the oncoming Marie Barrow, who had followed the shot, was just unable to make contact to guide the ball home.
Cardiffs’ next game is the quarter final of the Welsh cup away to Caernavon Town on Sunday 15th March.
