News Report
U14s v Treforest
(11th Mar 2009 09:35 AM)
Article by:
Zoe Mendham
Cardiff U14’s eventually ran out comfortable 8-1 winners to secure a League Cup Final place, despite a valiant effort from the home team who never stopped fighting.
The game began in perfect conditions with the rare sight of spectators having to shield their eyes from welcome sunshine.
The initial periods were scrappy with the teams feeling their way and play mostly in the middle third.
Gradually Cardiff began to exert control and opened the scoring with an excellent shot from distance from Kelly.
The goal spurred further efforts and, in a dominant period, a shot from Coryn forced a corner which Kelly expertly diverted into the goal for 2-0.
Cardiff continued in the ascendancy with Coryn shooting over the bar and a fine cross from Kelly flashing just wide.
The Cardiff midfield was generally in control but a rapid break from Treforest saw a fine shot produce a save of equal quality from Charlie.
A speculative through ball set Coryn free to lob the home keeper for 3-0, and further chances followed with Erin skimming the bar after a goal mouth scramble, but the break came with no addition to the score.
Treforest started the second period brightly pressurising Cardiff but with no clear chances.
At the other end Kelly shot just wide and Erin lobbed over as Cardiff re-asserted control.
The pressure from the visitors mounted and from a corner Taylor volleyed home for 4-0.
Cardiff turned midfield dominance into a succession of chances, with Erin latching on to a through ball, beating the keeper only to see the effort drift wide.
The fifth goal came with Kelly cutting in from the right to unleash a powerful shot which beat the keeper and nestled home off the bar.
Treforest continued to be organised and committed and hit the post from a good move, quickly followed by a shot over the bar.
In response, Kelly’s through ball split the home defence and Taylor broke through and finished emphatically to make it 6.
Treforest grabbed a consolation goal following poor Cardiff defending from a throw-in.
Almost immediately, however, Cardiff replied with a fine run and shot by Holly going in off the post.
The eighth came with a lovely move, fine passing in midfield put Taylor through to hold off the keeper and cut back for Erin to finish and make the final score 8-1.
There was time for a long shot by Kelly to pass just over the bar, but no further score as Cardiff progressed through to the final.
