Cardiff City v Crystal Palace Cardiff City v Crystal Palace (25th Mar 2009 11:44 AM)
Article by: Karen Jones

IT was a case of hard work on the training field paying off for Cardiff City Ladies, as two cleverly worked goals saw them defeat Crystal Palace in the FA Tesco Premier League Southern Division.

First-half strikes from Laurie Harries and Natasha Harding saw City stroll to a convincing 2-0 victory at Cardiff University Playing Fields in Llanrumney, with its sunny setting providing the perfect conditions for football.

Cardiff coach Michele Adams said: “They were two very good goals, the second one we are particularly pleased with as it was the sort of move we have worked on during training for a while now.”

There was little between City and the South Londoners, who had won the reverse fixture 4-3 earlier in the season, until Harries finished incisively on 23 minutes.
The Wales under-19 forward latched onto a chipped pass from the centre of midfield by Nicola Cousins, and had no trouble lobbing the Eagles goalkeeper to open the scoring.

From that point onwards, City took a stranglehold over the game and Harries could have doubled her tally on 39 minutes as she came close with a similar effort to the first goal.

This time it was Harding who lifted the ball into the path of Harries, but her shot fell inches wide of the right hand post.
On the stroke of half-time, City extended their advantage as Palace had no answer to an intelligent move which started from a throw-in deep inside the final third of the field.
Harries diverted the throw into the path of Jordan Frayne on the Cardiff right hand side, who played clinical ball along the ground which evaded the Crystal Palace defence.
Frayne’s pass found an unmarked Harding who slotted home, and her cool finish sent City into the break with a 2-0 lead.

The wind picked up in the second-half and this did not seem to be conducive to either side, but City were rarely troubled by their visitors who never really threatened Rhian Nokes’ goal.

City could have added to their lead on 56 minutes, but an audacious Cousins attempt from 25 yards out dipped just the wrong side of the post.

Substitutes Zoe Atkins, Sophie Ingle and Danielle Broadhurst all came into to a side packed full of players capped by Wales at either full, under-19 or under-17 level, but their combined endeavour in a busy team performance could not find a further goal.

Cardiff coach Adams added: “We played some of the best football we have done during this part of the season.”

The win sees Cardiff stay fifth with four league games remaining this season, and is their second victory in as many weeks after their 3-1 win at Caernarfon Town in the Welsh Cup.
Since then, they have been drawn out to play Blaenavon in the semi-finals as they strive to lift the trophy for a seventh successive season, with the game due to take place on April 19 at a neutral venue.

But Cardiff will be keeping their mind on the league, as they face another London club in the Southern Division next Sunday when they travel to Millwall Lionesses.
