U16's League Cup v Georgetown U16's League Cup v Georgetown (25th Mar 2009 07:16 PM)
Article by: Zoe Mendham

The format for the U16’s League Cup has changed for this season. It had been decided to have four pools of four teams playing each other in a round robin. The top two teams from each pool will qualify for the knockout stages.

The first game in the League Cup for both Cardiff U16’s and Georgetown saw Cardiff host Georgetown at St Mellons, on Sunday 22nd March. Georgetown were keen to make amends for the 10-0 loss against Cardiff earlier in the league this season.

Cardiff quickly got out of the blocks with an early goal from Lisa.

Georgetown may have conceded early but this only seemed to spur them on. If it wasn’t for good solid defence from Cardiff, and some point blanks saves from Jamie, the score may not have been 1-0 at half time.

The half time team talk focused on effort in the hot sunshine, as it was felt by all the coaches that some players could work a bit harder.

Both teams passed the ball around the pitch in the second half, and the players were all fully committed in their challenges.

Georgetown kept plugging away and all of the girls kept scraping for every ball.
However the Cardiff defence held out to keep a clean sheet.

The final score was 1-0, earning Cardiff a valuable win in their pool.

The second game saw Cardiff take on Georgetown again, the same day, at St Mellons, with Cardiff winning the previous one by a solitary strike.

Cardiff looked to get an early goal, and tested the Georgetown keeper from range early on.

Some of the efforts were a little wayward, but the idea was right. It was from a long range shot that Cardiff did open the scoring with Rachel hitting an unstoppable shot into the top left corner from around 25 yards.

Georgetown were determined to pressure Cardiff, and they closed down any space quickly as soon as the ball was passed.

Cardiff added a second from a corner that wasn’t fully cleared, before Abbie added a third to make the game safe.

Both teams worked hard throughout the game, in the hot conditions.

As we have learnt from previous games, Georgetown never gave up and kept trying to create chances.

The final score was 3-0, giving Cardiff their second win in their pool.
