News Report
Cardiff City v Millwall Lionesses

Zoe Mendham
Last Sunday, 29th March, Cardiff City Ladies lost 3-2 away to a well organised Millwall team who are slowly moving up the FA Tesco Women’s Premier League Southern Division table.
The first ten minutes of the game was dominated by Millwall who had several half chances, including a tame shot from Ann Marie Hetherston from a couple of yards out, which landed in the grateful arms of Cardiff keeper, Rhian Nokes.
Millwall saw a free kick from Leanne Champ hit the top of the Cardiff cross bar, followed shortly afterwards by the first goal when a deep cross from the right found Champ unmarked on the far side who headed the home team in front.
Cardiff’s first chance fell to Natasha Harding when Captain, Charlotte Miller, put in a defence splitting pass but Harding’s shot was straight into the arms of the Millwall keeper.
On 33 minutes, after Cardiff had started to pick up their work rate, they were rewarded with an equaliser when Millwall failed to clear a Harding throw in. Miller menacingly distracting the defender collected the loose ball and fired home from close range.
Millwall responded with another free kick just before half time which was gathered in safely by Nokes.
Cardiff started the second half with more energy, and early pressure on the Millwall defence gave Cardiff the lead when another long throw from Harding found Miller in the box. Her shot was cleared, and the resulting corner saw Jordan Frayne beat the defender to the cross and shoot. The keeper parried the shot on the goal line and Marie Barrow pounced to slot the ball home.
Five minutes later Heatherson took a shot which Nokes managed to get a hand to but Joanne Woodgates reacted quicker than the Cardiff defence and equalised for the home team.
On the hour Cardiff were forced to replace Frayne, having picked up an injury, and Rachel Cullen took her place in the heart of the midfield.
Miller then found Harding with a 30 yard cross field ball but the resulting shot was fired wide.
Millwall squandered two further chances to take the lead before Cardiff made another substitution, with Carla Parfitt being replaced by Zoe Atkins.
With fifteen minutes to go Barrow cleared a shot off the line from a Millwall corner, but the ball only rebounded to Heatherson who was unmarked on the far post and scored what turned out to be the winner from close range.
With five minutes to go, Barrow had a chance to save a point for the Welsh side but her header went agonisingly wide from a 30 yard cross field pass by Nicola Cousins.
After the game Cardiff Manager, Michele Adams, said, “I felt that we had done enough to get a point, if not three, and to come away from the game with nothing is very disappointing.”
Cardiff’s last home game is next Sunday, 5th April, at the University Playing Fields, Llanrumney against Barnet Ladies. Kick off is at 2.00pm.
