News Report
Cardiff City v Barnet
(10th Apr 2009 10:00 PM)
Article by:
Karen Jones
For the second week running Cardiff City LFC conceded a late winning goal, this time against promotion seeking Barnet Ladies in the FA Womens Premier Southern League.
In an entertaining and exciting game played in glorious sunshine, but on a dry bumpy service, which played its part in the opening minutes when Barnet striker Stacey Sowden sprung the Cardiff defence but her long range lob bounced over Cardiff goalkeeper Rhian Nokes and over the bar.
Cardiff forced to into playing a different formation without a sweeper were struggling to contain the lively Sowden, as Nokes was called on again to save with her feet.
Nicola Cousins and Sophie Ingle linked up in the heart of the midfield for Cardiff as Ingle did well to free Cousins whose long range shot went just flying just over the bar.
Good chances fell to both sides with Nokes saving bravely with a one handed save from Katie O’Leary, as Barnets goalkeeper Cherie Rowlands was called on to save from a Natasha Harding free kick.
The deadlock was broken on 23 minutes when a Harding crossfield ball found Laurie Harries who controlled the ball beautifully and unleashed a shot that flew past Rowlands from just inside the box.
Cardiff were forced to make changes in their defence as Amie Lea injured in a goalmouth mêlée, was replaced by Samantha Jones.
Barnet kept the game alive with several good chances from O’Leary and Sowden but Cardiff held out and went in at the break 1-0 up.
In the opening minutes of the second half Charlotte Miller laid on a perfectly weighted pass for Harries who lifted the ball and watched as her shot went agonisingly inches over the bar. Minutes later Cardiff had another good opportunity to put the game out of reach when a Cousins header was cleared off the line from a Harding corner.
Barnets equaliser came on 80 minutes from Sowden from a corner. Two minutes from time Claire Thomas fired home the winner from close range for the away side to take all three points.
