News Report
Keynsham Town v Cardiff City
(10th Apr 2009 10:02 PM)
Article by:
Karen Jones
After conceding late winning goals in their previous two games, fortunes changed for Cardiff City LFC in their midweek game away to Keynsham Town as they inflicted two late goals to dismantle a well organised Keynsham side and leap into 5th spot in the FA Womens Premier League Southern Division.
Cardiff with enforced changes due to injury and absence made a bright start and with only 9 minutes gone Natasha Harding unleashed a shot that crashed off the top of the crossbar.
Minutes later Cardiff came close again when Rachel Cullen and Samantha Jones worked well together out on the left hand side to free Jones who shot inches past the post.
Keynshams best effort came from a Cardiff mixup in the defence as they failed to clear the ball Keynshams striker Bruni appeared through a melee of players but failed to find the target.
Keynsham keeper Kelly Watkins kept her team in the game at the break with a fine save with her feet from Cardiff midfielder Nicola Cousins from a Jones free kick.
The opening minutes of the second half belonged to Keynsham as they forced a series of corners but had no firepower to break the Cardiff defence.
As a Cardiff attack broke down, the ball was cleared to Keynsham striker Bethan Lloyd who travelled through the centre of the pitch but her shot lacked any power to worry Rhian Nokes in the Cardiff goal.
Strikers Zoe Atkins and Laurie Harries worked hard up front for Cardiff and both had attempts on goal that went inches wide of the mark.
The deadlock was broken on 85 minutes when substitute Danielle Broadhurst on for Atkins, latched onto a Harding throw in on the edge of the box and her well placed shot flew past the static Watkins into the top left hand corner of the goal.
In injury time Cardiff made it 2-0 when lovely link up play from Charlotte Miller and Charlotte Preen resulted in Harries scoring a spectacular goal from just outside the box and earn Cardiff a well deserved three points and complete a league double over their local rivals, as well as knocking them out of the FA Cup earlier in the season on penalties.
Cardiff complete their league programme this coming Sunday when they play Barnet for the second week running and try and overturn last weeks 2-1 result. This Sundays game will be played at Hanwell Town 2pm kick Off.
