Barnet v Cardiff City

After their 2-0 win midweek against Keynsham Town which propelled them into 5th position of the FA Women’s Premier Southern League, Cardiff City LFC completed their league programme with a 1-1 draw away to Barnet.
Both sides had only met last week in the reverse fixture when Barnet inflicted two late goals to win the encounter 2-1. Cardiff were keen to bounce back and build on their good performance in their midweek game.
The game was marred by several controversial and dubious refereeing decisions which frustrated both teams throughout. The first after only 16 minutes which resulted in Barnet breaking the deadlock when the referee had indicated to play an advantage, but then awarded a free kick on the edge of the box which was headed home from Claire Thomas.
Cardiff then had a clutch of glorious opportunities to even the score. The first from Samantha Jones who could only fire weakly into the arms of Cherie Rowlands, the grateful Barnet keeper. Followed by a Natasha Harding corner kick which Terri Beddows rose to head just wide of the mark.
Cardiff’s equaliser came on 36 minutes when a Barnet defender challenging in the air pushed Cardiff midfielder Charlotte Miller off her feet resulting in a penalty kick which Harding coolly slotted home from the spot.
The final 10 minutes of the half ebbed and flowed end to end, but good defending from both sides denied either team taking the lead. Katie O’Leary fired wide for Barnet as down the other end her teammate Vicky Elcome cleared acrobatically off the line from a Beddows shot.
The second half was as exciting as the first, with several goalmouth incidents and plenty of missed chances, as both sides surged forward in search of the lead. Cardiff’ Zoe Atkins and Jones linked up to free Nicola Cousins from midfield but her shot whipped past the foot of the post.
Cardiff’s youngster Danielle Broadhurst who scored her first league goal in midweek had an audacious chip from way out well saved by Rowlands.
Barnet also had exchanges on the Cardiff goal with Riana Soobadoo forcing goalkeeper Rhian Nokes into action to claw the ball round the post. As defender Davina Smith fired over the crossbar.
The last attack of the game and the main talking point, as the referee was called on again to make a big decision when the ball appeared to bounce off the raised arm of a Barnet defender in the penalty area, but the referee waved play on despite exuberant appeals from the Cardiff players who had to be content to come home with just a point.
Cardiff’s next game is the Welsh Cup semi final against Blaenavon Blues this Sunday 19th April, at Ento Aberamans ground, Aberaman Park, 2pm kick off.
