Cardiff City v Blaenavon Blues Cardiff City v Blaenavon Blues (21st Apr 2009 03:47 PM)
Article by: Karen Jones

A thirteen goal blitz in the FA of Wales Challenge Cup secured Cardiff City LFC their 7th cup final in a row. Current Champions Cardiff overcame a battling young Blaenavon Blues side 13-2 at Ento Aberaman FC in an entertaining semi-final tie played in beautiful sunny conditions.

Cardiff got the goal scoring underway in the opening minute when Natasha Harding whose pace and ingenuity proved a handful all afternoon, bravely headed home from close range.

Minutes later Harding foiled Blaenavon forward Reed, with a fine goalmouth tackle as Blaenavon pressed for the equaliser, which came in the 12th minute with a fine strike from Tenah French.

Cardiff pounded the Blaenavon goal with strikers Zoe Atkins and Laurie Harries going close on several occasions, but were denied by the acrobats of Elisa Williams the Bleanavon goalkeeper who was outstanding all afternoon.

Two quick goals from Nicola Cousins and Harries settled the nerves a little for the
Champions, before Cardiff keeper Rhian Nokes mishit a clearance to allow French to slot the ball home and give fresh hope for the battling Blaenavon side.

But the celebrations were short lived as Cousins scored what could be a contender for goal of the match, as she unleashed a curling strike from 35 yards out that settled sweetly into the top right hand corner of the net.

Cardiff were now in control as they increased the tempo of the game, passing the ball around the park with confidence and finesse, with the midfield trio of Sam Jones, Danielle Broadhurst and Rachel Cullen all prominent in opening up the Blaenavon defence. Centre forward Atkins rounded off the scoring with two goals in succession to take a 6-2 lead in at half time.

Cardiff made 3 changes at the start of the second half as Lauren Townsend, Rachel Cullen and Laurie Harries made way for Sophie Ingle, Ellie Davies and Charlotte Preen.

Atkins completed her hatrick, followed by Harding, Terri Beddows and substitute Charlotte Preen.

The game slowed down considerably as Bleanavon ran out of steam and ideas, as Harding completed her hatrick, Atkins got on the scoresheet for her fourth goal, and substitute Sophie Ingle rounded off the scoring in injury time.

Afterwards Cardiff Coach Michele Adams praised the Blaenavon side stating “We played a young up and coming side who didn’t give up and stayed the course to the end of the game. I was pleased with our performance we passed the ball around very well especially in the first half. With our league games now finished we have a couple of weeks to prepare for the final”.

Cardiff City LFC will meet Caerphilly Castle who beat Swansea City 3-2 in the other semi final. The Final of the FA of Wales Challenge cup will be played on May the 10th venue to be confirmed.
