7th Cup Title for Ladies

Cardiff City Ladies clinched their seventh successive Welsh Cup title by defeating first-time finalists Caerphilly Castle Ladies 3-0. It was the second Welsh Cup final of the day at Haverfordwest FC, following the Cardiff City Ladies U16’s winning their Welsh Cup final 3-1 against Landore Colts.
The seniors took only three minutes to carve out their first assault on the Caerphilly goal but Nicola Cousins’ shot was fired just wide of the post.
Caerphilly’s reply came almost immediately but it turned out to be the only save of the game for Cardiff’s keeper, Rhian Nokes, and Caerphilly were also adjudged to commit a foul in the build up so it would have counted for nothing.
Cardiff took control of the game from there on and had a sequence of corners but the Caerphilly defence remained solid. A throw-in put them under pressure again but Cardiff’s hard-working Charlotte Miller, snatched at her shot and was deflected for a corner, which Cousins headed wide.
Rachel Cullen then ran half the length of the pitch and swung in a perfect cross from the right only to see Natasha Harding’s shot fired high over the cross bar.
On 35 minutes the Caerphilly Castle’s defence was eventually breached when Miller played the ball out wide to Cullen. She slipped the ball in low to the feet of Zoe Atkins who slotted the ball passed the despairing dive of Caerphilly keeper Sue Young.
Caerphilly managed to get to half time without conceding any more goals, despite a rasping 30 yard shot from Cardiff sweeper Lauren Townsend, which rattled the cross bar with the last kick of the half.
Cardiff continued the second half where they left off the first. Within two minutes they hit the cross bar twice more, with efforts from Atkins and midfielder Sophie Ingle, followed by a shot from Sam Jones which was hit just over the bar.
Caerphilly’s goal was under siege and the Cardiff girls were relentless in their attacks. Young was called upon to save from Harding’s shot.
Jones was replaced in the 55th minute for Terri Beddows whilst Caerphilly made their three substitutions in quick succession.
Caerphilly were starting to tire and the 78th minute saw Cullen ride two tackles out on the right side and cross in to the box for Harding to rifle home Cardiff’s second.
Danielle Broadhurst joined the play with fifteen minutes left, with a straight swap for goal scorer Atkins. She was unlucky not to get on the score sheet herself within a few minutes when her shot hit the cross bar, followed by another shot just wide of the far post.
With five minutes left, Cardiff made their last substitution, with Ellie Davies coming on for Cousins.
It seemed appropriate for Cardiff captain, Miller, to score the last goal, which came in injury time. Broadhurst headed the ball down into her path and she blasted an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net, leaving Young rooted to the spot.
Cardiff lift the Welsh Cup for a successive seventh year, eight in total, and again represent Wales in the UEFA Women’s Cup qualifying round to be held at the end of July, the location yet to be decided.
After the game Cardiff Club Coach, Michele Adams said, “It has been a very successful day for the club, with our Under 16’s also winning the Welsh Cup. Both games were very exciting to watch. A big thank you goes out to all the supporters that made the long trip to Haverfordwest to cheer us on. I’m sure we made their trip worthwhile.”
