Under 14's Beaten to Tesco Cup Title Under 14's Beaten to Tesco Cup Title (18th May 2009 09:59 AM)
Article by: Zoe Mendham

With a fine day and an excellent pitch, the stage was set Cardiff Under 12’s most important game of the season, the Tesco Cup Final, against close rivals Thornhill.

The early exchanges were nervous and a little scrappy but not short of endeavour and commitment.

Cardiff started very well but were knocked back when Thornhill, and the game's outstanding player, beat several defenders and finished powerfully for Thornhill to take the lead.

Cardiff responded well and shot narrowly wide - an effort that likely would have been ruled offside if successful.

There then came another blow to Cardiff when Jess had to leave the pitch injured, causing a re-shuffle with Aimee dropping to defence and Erin on in midfield.

Cardiff then produced a real chance to equalise with Coryn's run and cross only needing a touch, but Taylor could not quite get there. Cardiff forced two successive corners but neither gave a clear chance.

At the other end a Thornhill shot flashed over the bar.

Another chance for Cardiff came and went when Corin shot after a fine move only to see the effort saved by the keeper's legs.

As half time approached Cardiff were rocked again as Thornhill broke through and finished well to go two up.

The response was almost immediate and having forced a corner Chanelle's far post header gave Cardiff the goal they deserved to go into the break at 2-1 but unlucky to be behind.

Cardiff started the second period brightly with a strong run and cross by Holly but again the keeper saved.

Thornhill's Number 9 was proving the difference between the sides and she completed a fine hat trick by again running free and finishing well to put her side 3-1 ahead.

Cardiff were not short of spirit and pushed forward with Taylor breaking through just to be beaten to the final touch by the Thornhill keeper.

The Thornhill No.9 was a constant threat with pace and power sending her clear once to be beaten to the finish by Charlie sprinting from goal, but a second break could not be repelled and again she finished well for 4-1.

The game was clearly won and it entered a flat period with Thornhill comfortable, but Cardiff weren’t going to give up and they forced a corner which Coryn flashed in for 4-2.

Cardiff clung to an outside hope as the match drew towards a close and pushed on. Erin had a good chance but saw her shot saved, and the final whistle came.

Cardiff had come runners-up to the better team on the day but were gracious in defeat and a big thank you goes out to all the supporters who turned up to watch.
