U14's v Dinas in a Double Header
(18th May 2009 10:16 AM)

Zoe Mendham
On Sunday 22nd April Cardiff U14s traveled to Dinas Powys where they played a double header with Dinas U14’s, but were unable to take any points from either game.
Game 1
The game began with exchanges in midfield signalling what was to be a tight contest throughout. Dinas forced a series of corners but none resulted in clear chances. Charlie also had to race from her line on several occasions to thwart home attacks. At the other end Cardiff threatened but the half was characterised by competitive midfield exchanges and few clear-cut openings.
As the second half began the home side pressed again and Coryn had to clear from her own goal line to keep the scores level.
Cardiff then broke through and hit the post with the ball bouncing out and bobbling around the area but finding no-one to hit home.
The game was end to end with both sides trying to force the first goal, a cross flashed across the Cardiff goal, at the other end Coryn produced some fine runs that came to nothing.
The game was to finish on a highly contentious and unfortunate note. Amid calls for off side Dinas broke through and Charlie was adjudged to have handled outside her area. The kick was allowed to be taken immediately and without Charlie even having time to return to her goal, the ball was struck home to give the home side a 1-0 victory with the last kick of the game.
Game 2.
Encouraged by their late winner in the first game, Dinas started the second well producing early strikes which were saved well. The goal was coming and was eventually forced in from a corner to give the home side an early lead.
In response Katie produced a good shot which was equally well saved, and Cardiff swept away from a Dinas corner with Chanelle ending a fine move with a shot over the bar. Another move produced a cross driven across the six yard box with no-one to touch home, and from a similar move Coryn almost finished. Cardiff were awarded a long range free kick just before half time and from Kelly's cross-come-shot Coryn turned in the equaliser and we went to the break all square.
The second period began competitively but the home side scored from a poor goal kick gratefully claimed by their striker to slot home for 2-1.
Cardiff pushed for a second equaliser and Kelly shot over from distance.
Dinas broke away with a fine move, strong cross and emphatic finish for 3-1.
Cardiff produced plenty of energy but could not create clear chances. The best efforts came when first Corin produced a penetrative run to cross but Chanelle could not quite apply the finish, then Coryn cut in from the wing only to see her shot saved.
The game ended with Dinas taking all the points from two tough games.
