U14's v Cambrian U14's v Cambrian (19th May 2009 03:33 PM)
Article by: Zoe Mendham

On Friday 8th May, Cardiff Under 14’s travelled to Cambrian for an evening match against title chasing Cambrian Under 14’s.

Cambrian came out very strongly and opened the scoring early from a defensive error.
This spurred Cardiff into action and they forced a corner and had a shot from Kelly which was well saved.

Coryn, who was lively all game, produced an excellent effort which was again saved by the very assured home keeper.

Holly then flashed a cross through the six yard box, but no one could find the touch which would have meant a certain goal.

Cardiff were to rue these missed chances as a fine shot from outside the area doubled the home lead after another out of character defensive error.

Cardiff tried to respond but were soon further behind after Cambrian broke through with extreme suspicion of offside and finished well.

The fourth was quickly added from the same source, unfortunately muscling Amy off the ball, which a free kick could have gone either way, again with a hint of off-side about it and with just before half time, which could have caused the girls to give up. Cardiff therefore went into the break 4-0 down and wondering if the unusual defensive errors and dubious refereeing decisions had cost them dear.

To their great credit, Cardiff did not let heads drop and came out very competitively. Erin produced a fine shot which was well saved and then a good run from Coryn put Chanelle in with a chance and excellent control and an assured finish pulled a goal back.

Cardiff were much more in the game now but Charlie still had to produce a good save from a Cambrian free kick.

At the other end a Kelly free kick got the slightest touch from Coryn and found its way into the back of the net for 4-2.

Cardiff were also defending better and began to dream of an unlikely come back.
They produced one final effort from a great run by Coryn and a good strike by Erin but the keeper denied any further score and the game ended 4-2.

Cardiff can look back on a game of two halves and take encouragement from their performance in the second period.
