Ladies Will Face Tough Test in Europe
(21st Jul 2009 05:36 PM)

Cardiff City Ladies FC have been drawn against former UEFA Women’s Cup semi-finalists Brondby IF, Portugal's SU 1° Dezembro, and Malta's Birkirkara FC in the UEFA Women's Champions League qualifying round.
The Danish side will be the host’s for the Group A3 first round of qualifying, which is one of seven mini-tournaments whose winners will progress to join the 25 other entrants, including holders FCR 2001 Duisburg, in the knockout phase of the competition. The final will be played two days before the men's UEFA Champions League final in Madrid on Thursday 20 May 2010.
This is a tough draw for the Welsh Champions who are participating in their seventh successive UEFA campaign. Brondby are the top seeds for the group and have very good pedigree in the tournament having reached the last four of the UEFA Women's Cup in 2003–04 and the UEFA Women's Cup 2006-07.
Cardiff have faced the Portugal champions SU 1 Dezembro before; in 2005 Dezembro ran out 3-0 winners, however, similar to Cardiff, they have a disappointing record in the tournament with only 8 wins from 21 matches. City have won 4 of their 18 appearances.
Not much is known about the Maltese champions Birkirkara FC, however this is their second appearance in the tournament.
Club captain, Charlotte Miller said of the news “We do accept that this is tough test we have been given.
"Both Brondby and Dezembro are clubs with fine history in the competition. Brondby are probably one of the best teams to have played this level and we want to test ourselves against this qualify of opponent.”
City’s first match will be against Brondby on the 30th July.
