Cardiff City Ladies v Brondby Ladies

Welsh Cup champions, Cardiff City Ladies’ first match in the UEFA Champions League Qualifying round was against hosts Brondby Ladies of Denmark, previous semi finalists in the competition. Although it was a tough challenge for the Welsh side, the 5-0 score didn’t reflect the effort put in.
Cardiff started well, putting in strong tackles and making the Danes work for their possession,. It was in the fourth minute that Brondby had their first effort on goal, after a corner was pulled back to the edge of the box but the resulting shot went wide.
Cardiff’s Tash Harding then found herself running towards the Brondby keeper, who was quick off her line and cleared before the shot came in.
Brondby were quick to switch play and shortly afterwards, a through ball was misjudged by the Cardiff defence but keeper, Rhian Nokes was equal to the shot and gathered the ball safely.
It was in the 11th minute that the hosts broke the deadlock, following a corner which was headed home by the six foot forward Neilson.
Cardiff responded almost immediately with Harding running onto a through ball but her shot was blocked.
Five minutes later, Brondby were two up when Mia Olsen split the defence open with a mazy run from midfield and slotted under the oncoming Nokes.
On 20 minutes, before Cardiff had time to regroup, the Danes were three ahead after a fine passing move from the defence through to the forwards and into the back of the net.
Shortly afterwards, Nokes was called upon to make a fine, fingertip save pushing the ball over the cross bar from a long range shot by the experienced midfielder, Lene Jensen. The corner was cleared off the line by wing back, Rachel Cullen.
Jensen‘s pace was causing problems down the left side for the Cardiff defence, and Nokes was forced to make another tremendous save. Nic Cousins cleared the ball which resulted in Harding winning a free kick. Lauren Townsend floated the ball in and the keeper, Petersen saved bravely under pressure from Cousins. They were unlucky not to convert the resulting corner after a flick-on into the six yard box.
With only eight minutes gone in the second half, Cardiff defender Amie Lea was booked for a tough tackle on the Brondby winger. The free kick was floated straight into the top corner of the Cardiff goal to put the Danes four up.
Cardiff made a few substitutions shortly afterwards with Zoe Atkins replacing the injured Harding, and Ellie Davies taking over from centre midfielder, Danielle Broadhurst.
The Cardiff girls held firm until the final five minutes when Nokes made yet another fine save, but she was unlucky that the rebound fell to the feet of Christiansen who had the easiest job of tapping the ball into the unguarded goal to make the final score 5-0.
After the game Cardiff coach, Michele Adams, said, “I was more than pleased with the teams’ efforts. We must realise that we were playing one of Europes top four teams of last season. For long periods of the game, particularly in the second half, we stuck to our game plan, which was pleasing with such a young squad. The score doesn’t really reflect the efforts that we put in.”
Cardiff’s next match is against the Portuguese champions, SV 1 Dezembro on Saturday 1st August, and their final match is against the Maltese champions, Birkirkara Ladies, on Tuesday 4th.
