Cardiff City v Dezembro, Portugal Cardiff City v Dezembro, Portugal (1st Aug 2009 06:51 PM)
Article by: Zoe Mendham

Cardiff City Ladies’ were matched against the Portuguese Champions, S.U. 1 Dezembro in their second match of the UEFA Champions League Qualifying round, being held in Denmark. Having been beaten by them in their last two meetings, Cardiff were hoping for a change of fortune. However, the Portuguese had other ideas and again came out winners in a closely fought match, this time by a 3-0 score line.

Dezembro took the lead in the opening ten minutes when a one-two in the midfield cut through the Cardiff defence and a fine cross found the head of Carolina Mendes who powered the ball passed the despairing dive of the Cardiff keeper, Rhian Nokes.

Cardiff responded almost immediately with a long range effort from midfielder, Nicola Cousins, which almost caught out keeper, Carla Correia.

On 20minutes a Cardiff corner was cleared by the Portuguese and, on the break, forced Nokes into a tremendous save, with her sweeper, Lauren Townsend, clearing the ball to safety.

This was followed by a spell of Cardiff possession, moving the ball around with confidence, and pressuring the Dezembro defence, but they were unable to make it count.

In the 32nd minute, following a missed tackle on the left, Nokes was again called into action to block a shot, however, the rebound was crossed back into the danger area and Edite Fernandes made no mistake, doubling the Portuguese lead.

Six minutes later, after good work from Tash Harding, Cardiff were awarded a corner which she narrowly headed over the crossbar.

Cardiff came out strong in the second half, believing that the game was still theirs to win but were still unable to breach the Dezembro defence.

With an hour gone, Cardiff Coach Michele Adams made some tactical changes bringing off forward Charlotte Preen and replacing her with Ellie Davies, who took her place on the right of midfield, moving Danielle Broadhurst up front with Harding. Within minutes of the change, Harding had a shot on goal well saved by Correia.

The Welsh girls kept up the pressure and Harding was again on target forcing the keeper to push the ball around the far post.

Shortly afterwards, defender Amie Lea tried her luck but this time the ball landed safely in the arms of the grateful Dezembro keeper.

On 78 minutes the Portuguese substitute Filipa Galvao, was given too much time on the ball and with a cross come shot saw the ball float over Nokes and into the top corner of the goal making the score 3-0.

With one of the last kicks of the game, Nokes dived bravely at the feet of the Dezembro forward but, yet again, all three points went to the Portuguese.

After the Cardiff performance, Adams said, “It was a disappointing first half but we improved in the second. Our first two games have been very physical and we have picked up a few injuries on the way, but despite that, the squad are working well together and we are all looking forward to finishing the tournament with a win against the Maltese.”

Cardiff’s last match is against the Maltese champions, Birkirkara Ladies, on Tuesday 4th August.
