News Report
Cardiff City v Birkirkara, Malta
(6th Aug 2009 10:21 AM)

Zoe Mendham
Cardiff City Ladies’ final match in the UEFA Womens Champions League qualifying round was against Maltese champions, Birkirkara, which saw Cardiff run out winners 10-1, to finish in third place in what turned out to be a tough group.
Within the first six minutes of the game Cardiff were two up with goals from Tash Harding and a 25 yard strike from Captain, Charlotte Miller.
After just 10 minutes, youngster Danielle Broadhurst, playing as a central striker, got on the score sheet by chipping the Birkirkara keeper at her far post.
Cardiff were in total control, being allowed time and space to move the ball around the field, and on 17 minutes Harding got her second goal with a deflection off a defender.
She was unlucky not to add to her tally almost immediately when she chipped the keeper and the ball rebounded off the cross bar. However, four minutes later, Harding got her hat trick after a cross from the right from full back, Aime Lea, and was nodded in at the far post.
Cardiff Coach, Michele Adams, made an early substitution with Broadhurst making way for debutant Ellie Smith. She got stuck in immediately when Lea sent a long ball through to Harding who played a one-two with Smith, giving Harding the opportunity to slot home her fourth and Cardiffs’ sixth goal.
Straight from the restart, Cardiff won back the ball and Harding made no mistake, heading towards the goal and lobbing the luckless Maltese keeper, Tonina Dimech, to increase her tally to five.
On 40minutes Harding turned provider when she crossed the ball for Marie Barrow to side foot into the back of the net at the far post.
Just before half time Nicola Cousins set up her own chance to finish the first half scoring with Cardiff going in 9-0 up at the break.
Cardiff made a half time substitution when Lea made way for Rachel Cullen and although they kept the pressure up, it was Birkirkara that opened the scoring when Rachel Cuschieri waltzed through the centre of the Cardiff defence and slotted the ball passed the oncoming keeper, Sophie Dando.
Cardiff made their final change with Barrow being replaced by Ellie Davies and, although they kept up the pressure on the Maltese goal, the crossbar kept the scoring down on several occasions.
Defender Terri Beddows was unlucky not to get on the score sheet when her header was cleared off the line.
In the 82nd minute Cardiff final reached double figures when Cousins scored her second from a corner which landed on the six yard box. She blasted the ball home with no mistake to make the final score 10-1 to the Welsh girls and finishing a creditable third in the group.
After the game Adams said, “On the whole we are pleased with our effort in the tournament. We set out to use it as preparation for our season and we are happy with the squads performance over the three quality pre-season games.”
