Cardiff City v Barnet Cardiff City v Barnet (19th Aug 2009 05:17 PM)
Article by: Zoe Mendham

It was a frustrating start to the new season for Cardiff City Ladies as they were beaten 3-1 away to last seasons league runners up Barnet on the opening day of the season in the Tesco FA Womens Football League Southern Division.

The Welsh side started the brighter as the opening minutes were played at a fast and furious pace with Cardiff surging forward in numbers playing with an attractive passing movement. But despite peppering the Barnet goal with a string of chances, tame finishing cost Cardiff dearly as they could not capitalise on their vast amount of possession.

Charlotte Miller set up the first chance of the game with some lovely link up play with strikers Natasha Harding and Zoe Atkins, but her thunderous shot was well held by Barnet goalkeeper Cherie Reid.

Minutes later, midfielder Sophie Ingle laid on a pin point pass for Danielle Broadhurst but again the shot was fired into the grateful arms of Reid.

Cardiff's best chance came on 15 minutes when Miller found Harding out wide on the left hand side and as she cut inside to shoot from an acute angle the ball agonisingly trickled past the far post with Atkins scrambling to get on the end of it.

Barnets best efforts were reduced to a series of free kicks which were dealt with by the Cardiff defence.

The deadlock was broken on 24 minutes against the run of play, when Ingle brought down Barnet winger Cheryl Williams in the penalty area. Williams got up and dusted herself off to fire the spot kick past Cardiff keeper Rhian Nokes.

The goal changed the pattern of the game as the home side grew in confidence, and saw a Stacey Sowden effort well saved by the feet of Nokes as the home side took a goal lead into the break.

Cardiff came out for the second half probing forward in search of the equaliser, and making changes in personnel with the experience of Marie Barrow coming on for Rachel Cullen and Ellie Davies replacing Zoe Atkins.

Despite long periods of possession for the Cardiff side it was Barnet who got on the score sheet to double their lead on 64 minutes when the Cardiff defence failed to deal with the mazey run of Danielle Murphy and striker Sowden finished off the move stroking the ball home to make it 2-0.

Cardiff introduced 16 year old Lisa Bird on 70 minutes for her debut in senior football and her industrious play was rewarded with a goal as Harding squared the ball for Bird to get on the score-sheet. But, Cardiff were stung minutes later when again Sowden fired home for the home side and take all three points.

After the game Cardiff Coach Michele Adams commented "We are disappointed to open the season with a defeat, especially after starting the game so well, but we do have to make our chances count and be much more purposeful in front of goal".

Cardiff are without a league game this coming Sunday due to the Senior Womens friendly international game at Llanelli, and return to league action with a home game against West Ham United on Sunday 30th August at Cardiff International Sports Stadium, 2pm kick off.
