News Report
Cardiff City v Keynsham Town
(4th Sep 2009 03:04 PM)

In the first floodlit game of the FA Tesco Women’s Premier League Southern Division season, Cardiff City Ladies set out their stall from the kick off. After their disappointing, lack lustre performance against West Ham last Sunday they galloped to a 2 nil lead within 10 minutes. The conditions were cold, wet and blustery but a warming performance was put on for the neutral!
With only five minutes on the clock, a Cardiff goal kick was won by Sophie Ingle and her clever defence-splitting pass set up Zoe Atkins, who raced through and calmly slotted passed the oncoming Lynette Newton in Keynsham’s goal.
Cardiff, with their tails up, then had several good opportunities to increase the lead. Atkins’ tenacity paid off when she won the ball on the edge of box and found Lisa Bird with her back to the goal. She turned and volleyed just over the bar.
The Welsh girls then had a series of corner kicks. Cardiff defender, Terri Beddows dominated the aerial power, threatening the Keynsham goal. One header was cleared off the line for a throw in. The resulting throw in saw Atkins’ shot blocked but Beddows was on hand to knock in the rebound to give Cardiff a two goal cushion.
Keynsham had several half chances of their own and Rusek Katarzyna came closest but fired over the Cardiff cross bar.
Ingle slotted a delightful ball through to Marie Barrow who set off on a powerful run, rounded the defence and her low cross found Atkins, but her shot was bravely blocked on the line.
On 33 minutes Keynsham equalised when Leanne Lapham’s shot, from an acute angle hit the post and rebounded over the unlucky Cardiff keeper, Rhian Nokes, and into the back of the net.
Just before half time Cardiff were unlucky not to increase their lead when some lovely link-up play between Danielle Broadhurst and Ingle saw a perfect cross field ball land just ahead of Barrow. She was unable to connect, with the goal mouth begging.
Cardiff came out in the second half working as hard as they finished the first half. They were soon rewarded when centre back, Lauren Townsend, went on a marathon run through the middle of the park. She slipped the ball to Bird who calmly placed it over the oncoming Newton and into the goal.
Atkins caused the Keynsham defence problems all night with her terrier like work rate. She then set up Nicola Cousins who blasted her effort just over the bar.
Keynsham Town didn’t give up and on 78 minutes Andrea Albxandru fired a shot just over. Katarzyna then drove in a low cross that Nokes could only touch into the path of Ashley Reinecke who had the easy task of knocking the ball home.
Keynsham pressed for the equaliser and only two minutes later they were rewarded for their persistence when a Tanja Andjelkovic free kick from 25 yards out, dipped and curled between the angle of the far post and crossbar to bring the visitors level.
Both teams pushed for the winner in last ten minutes and the action was end to end. By the time the final whistle was blown they had to be content with sharing the points with Cardiff being the more disappointed with the result.
Cardiff travel to Colchester next Sunday, 6th September, with both the First team and the Reserves taking on United over in East Anglia.
Cardiffs’ next home game is in the League Cup when they take on their rivals from across the bridge, Bristol Academy. Please note that kick off is 1pm due to a league game taking place across the road!!
