Cardiff City v Bristol Acadmy Cardiff City v Bristol Acadmy (13th Sep 2009 05:20 PM)
Article by: Zoe Mendham

Cardiff City Ladies were outplayed by four goals to nil against Bristol Academy in this First Round tie of the FA Women’s Premier League Cup match at the International Sports Stadium on Sunday.

It was the Premier Division side from across the bridge that settled into their stride quicker than Cardiff, who are one division lower in the league. An early warning to the Welsh girls was when Paige Stewart sent in a cross that Sharla Passariello headed over the cross bar.

Cardiff midfielders, Nicola Cousins and Sophie Ingle, then linked up well and were rewarded with a series of corners, one of which Cousins headed just over.

Shortly afterwards, Tash Harding muscled her way passed Bristol defender Grace McGatty and Lisa Birds’ cross was narrowly missed by the oncoming Danielle Broadhurst.

It was Bristol that broke the deadlock in the tenth minute when Passariello slotted her chance passed the despairing dive of Cardiff keeper Rhian Nokes.

Within a few minutes they were two up when ex Cardiff player, Loren Dykes, lobbed Nokes to nestle the ball into the back of the net.

Just before half time the Cardiff defence were caught flat footed and Stewart shot across the goal, with the ball going in off the far post for a 3-0 lead at the break.

Cardiff Manager, Michele Adams made two changes at half time, with defender Amie Lea being replaced by Carla Parfitt and Broadhurst making way for Zoe Atkins up front.

Bristol struggled to contain the pace of Bird and Atkins who were both pressurising the defence with their pace. Sophie Ingle and Harding worked together to put Atkins through on goal only to see her shot blocked by Bristol keeper Sally Ann Thompson.

Harding also made the Bristol defence work hard, winning a corner that found the head of Terri Beddows, who was unlucky to see the ball go harmlessly over the bar.

Although Cardiff restricted Bristols’ space for long periods of the second half, it was Stewart that got her second goal in the 80th minute when the ball sat up nicely on the edge of the box for her to strike it passed Nokes, and put Bristol Academy into the Second Round draw.

Cardiff City Ladies are back in league action next Sunday, 20th away to Brighton and Hove Albion before returning home on the 27th to take on Londoners, Crystal Palace.
