News Report
Cardiff City v Crystal Palace

Cardiff City Ladies secured their first win of the season after beating Crystal Palace Ladies 2-0 in what turned out to be a rather one-sided affair. With nine players returning from international duty with the Wales U19’s in Denmark, and four players having been on senior international duty, fitness was always going to be a concern.
Within ten minutes Cardiff City Ladies had taken control of the game and the pace of Lisa Bird and Tash Harding up front was causing the Palace defence all sorts of problems. They were struggling to contain the neat passing and quick tempo of the Cardiff girls.
Bird blasted her first shot straight into the arms of the Palace keeper Sam Sharp, followed by a Nicola Cousins free kick which both Harding and Amie Lea were unlucky not to connect with at the far post. Then Lea delivered a corner but this time it was Cousins that headed the ball at the keeper.
It was 15 minutes before Crystal Palace had their first attempt on goal when centre forward Abigail Ingram hoisted the ball towards the Cardiff goal from 30 yards out and it was easily gathered by Rhian Nokes on the edge of her box.
Harding and Bird again linked up with Harding seeing her shot acrobatically cleared off the line by ex-Cardiff player, Sian Cheedy.
Crystal Palace were surviving after yet another goal line clearance after Danielle Broadhurst had put Marie Barrow through, powering her shot towards goal, but again unable to breach the defence.
Sophie Ingle and Ellie Davies were commanding in midfield, and on several occasions Davies tried her luck to open the scoring but her first shot was blocked and her second chance was from a Charlotte Miller cross which she narrowly failed to connect with.
The first half was marred by a nasty injury picked up by Ingle when a clash of heads resulted in her having to leave the field for treatment to a facial injury.
Despite all the Cardiff pressure, they were unable to get on the score sheet before half time and remarkably both teams were going in level at the break.
Cardiff carried on the second half where they left off the first. The Palace keeper saved another shot from Barrow and then saw Bird’s dipping shot clip the crossbar and go over.
After 70 minutes the Palace defence eventually succumbed to Cardiff’s dominance when Lea sent over a deep cross from the right which found Davies on the far post to stab home the opener.
Shortly afterwards Cardiff made a few changes with Ellie Smith replacing Bird and then defender Lauren Townsend making way for Terri Beddows. This turned out to be an inspired substitution when, in the 85th minute, Davies floated in a corner which saw Beddows rise above everyone else to head the ball passed the despairing keeper.
Cardiff’s final substitution saw Lindsey Davies make her debut, replacing the wounded Ingle. Within a minute she was making a nuisance of herself with the Palace defence when she drove a low shot towards goal but the hard-working Sharp saved well.
The last move of the game was a Cardiff corner which Lindsey Davies crossed to the far post only to see Cousins fire just over the cross bar.
After the game Cardiff Manager, Michele Adams said, “It’s great to record our first win of the season but, on the other hand, a 2-0 score line doesn’t reflect our dominance. I’m pleased with the result considering that so many of the girls had tough international games last week.”
Cardiff City Ladies are away to Keynsham Town on Wednesday evening, with a 7.30pm kick off, before travelling to newly promoted Queens Park Rangers Ladies next Sunday, 4th October.
