Cardiff U16’s v Sully
A new season and already one week late, but to come down to sunny Sully is a bonus. Blue sea and blue sky gave the Under 16’s hope that it was going to be the ‘Blues’ day.
We started slowly but this is only to be expected as, apart from three players, we have a different side from last season, with several girls coming up from the Under 14’s. It will take some time to get to know each others game.
Kath Carey gave us the perfect start when she gave us our first goal of the year which helped us to a half time lead.
The start of the second half saw both teams pass the ball well around the pitch, and the Cardiff players were fully committed in their challenges. Sully kept plugging away and we kept fighting for every ball.
However, our defence were working hard to keep a clean sheet, with goalkeeper, Charlie, clearing her line when needed.
Then Kelly Bourne hit a lovely shot to put us 2-0 up, giving us a comfortable cushion.
But Sully had other ideas and scored a late goal, making us realise that the game wasn’t over.
Our new captain, and midfielder, Lorraine took her new role seriously and kept the girls going. Her leadership paid off when the defence linked well with the midfield and Kelly scored again, giving us a well deserved 3-1 win.

Cardiff U16’s v Thornhill
This was always going to be hard game with the Thornhill girls moving up from the U14’s in block from last season. Cardiff didn’t dare give them an inch because we knew we would be punished if we did.
The girls worked hard to win the tackles and headers but the ball just would not go in to the Thornhill goal and it was goalless at half time.
The Cardiff girls gave just as much commitment in the second half as the first. Our defence of Charlotte, Liz, Helen and Jess were working hard, and with Charlie behind them in goal, they were determined to keep a clean sheet.
Kath and Coyrn, in the midfield, continued to run up and down the wing and Lorraine, Kelly, Jenna and Storm were all working well together. We made a substitution just before the end of the game and Holly replaced Storm.
With only two minutes left on the clock we were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position. Jess stepped up to take it and floated it into the box. Kath climbed above the defence to score a last gasp goal. I don’t know who jumped the highest on the side line, me or Matt.
The referee blew the final whistle and we had taken all three points in a very hard fought match.

Abertysswg v Cardiff U16’s
Cardiff Under 16’s travelled up the valley to Abertysswg knowing that this was going to be another tough game. Lorraine and Kath were unavailable due to injury but Chez was back in team.
Jess started in a new midfield role and she was outstanding, being involved in every move Cardiff made.
Abertysswg put in some very tough tackles but our girls were equal to them.
Coryn did plenty of running on the wing and Kath was unlucky not to be free scoring. Holly and Jess were playing well together on the same side of the field and it was only a matter of time before we broke the Abertysswg defence.
Sure enough it was Jenna that scored a great goal from the middle of the park to send us in to the break with a precious one goal lead.
Cardiff came out a different team in the second half and took control straight from the kick off. Kelly then scored a great goal which was started from midfield and she calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net for our second. Kelly is always there to step up the pace when needed and on this occasion she didn’t disappoint.
Kelly then scored her second and Cardiff’s third before Abertysswg pulled one back with an unstoppable shot passed the despairing dive of Charlie in goal.
By the end of this match we had earned another three points and now have maximum points from the three games. However, there is a long way to go and I think there will be plenty of twists before the end of the season.
The coaches ‘Players of Day’ were Jess and Chez.
