News Report
Cardiff City v Keynsham Town
(2nd Oct 2009 09:28 PM)
Article by:
Zoe Mendham
For the second time this month Cardiff City Ladies have let a two goal lead slip against Keynsham Town Ladies, when they drew 2-2 in a floodlit league match in Bristol last Wednesday evening.
Cardiff were forced to make three changes to the side that picked up three points last Sunday, due to injury and illness.
The visitors took an early lead when, in the 4th minute, Ellie Smith set up Marie Barrow, who put in an inviting deep cross to the far post which Danielle Broadhurst met perfectly to smash the ball home.
Keynsham had a good opportunity to draw level when an Ashley Reinbeke shot deflected off Nicola Cousins and was sent just over the bar. Good defensive work by Cardiff made sure that the resulting corner was cleared.
A mazy run by Keynsham’s Katarzyna Rusbk came to an abrupt end on the edge of the box when she was upended by Cousins, who made amends when she cleared the free kick off the goal line.
Keynsham had a good spell of possession and had a series of corners but Cardiff’s defence, marshalled by Cousins, were organised and contained Keynsham to half chances.
On 33 minutes Tash Harding put in a beautifully weighted free kick, teasing the Keynsham defence, and, as Smith went up to challenge for the ball, the defender handled it, resulting in a penalty kick. Harding stepped up and made no mistake to rifle home from the spot.
The referee didn’t allow the game to flow, stopping for any little incident. This resulted in both sides becoming frustrated and annoyed.
On 45 minutes Cousins was unlucky to concede a penalty when she turned her body to block a Rusbk shot which hit her hand resulting in a spot kick for Keynsham. Hajrua Sabic stepped up to slot home and narrow the half time deficit.
Shortly after the start of the second half, Lauren Townsend took a free kick which flew just wide of the Keynsham post.
Then Cardiff had a good fifteen minute spell of possession and chances but were unable to capitalise on it.
Midfielder, Ellie Davies picked up an injury and was replaced by Charlotte Preen.
Cardiff keeper, Rhian Nokes was called into action when she clawed away a lob which Townsend was able to clear harmlessly out of the box.
Keynsham then scored the equaliser on 80 minutes when Cardiff failed to clear the ball out of the box and Ana Bruni cleverly placed the ball over Nokes as she came off her line in an attempt to block the shot.
The final ten minutes was end to end as both sides pushed for the winner. There were good chances at each end but it was Cardiff who had the final chance when a Harding corner was met by Terri Beddows, but she headed just wide and the points were shared again, with a 2-2 score line.
