News Report
Cardiff City v Queens Park Rangers
(6th Oct 2009 01:28 PM)

Cardiff City Ladies brought home all three points from London when they beat league newcomers Queens Park Rangers 2-0 in this FA Tesco Women’s Premier League Southern Division match.
Within the first few minutes Rangers striker Seun Odeniyi was forced wide by Cardiff keeper, Rhian Nokes, but found the angle too tight to take advantage.
Cardiff forwards Tash Harding and Lisa Bird have been playing well together in recent games and this was no exception. They linked up for Cardiff’s first attack and Harding’s pace beat Rangers defender, Terri Coombes, out on the right side before cutting in to the box and testing keeper Jess Devoti, who saved well on her near post.
This was followed shortly afterwards by a Nicola Cousins free kick which Amie Lea volleyed just over the bar.
It was Lea who turned defence into attack when she blocked a pass in the middle of the park and, with a pinpoint pass, put Harding through. She jinxed her way into the Rangers area and again forced a good save from Devoti.
Rangers then had their chance to open the scoring when Mel Bidell found Odeniyi unmarked in the six yard box but only a couple of yards out failed to find the target.
Cardiff Captain, Charlotte Miller hooked a Harding throw in towards goal and Bird’s snap shot on the volley went just wide.
Bird then turned provider when she put Harding through on goal but she was unable to direct her shot passed the oncoming Devoti, putting the ball agonisingly wide of the post.
Cardiff were well in control, but just before half time Rangers again shook the Cardiff defence when Cherelle Albert beat Cousins in the area and Nokes was called upon to block the close-range shot and then Albert blasted the rebound over the bar.
Despite Cardiff having the majority of the possession they were unable to capitalise on it and both teams went in goalless at half time.
The Welsh girls continued their dominance after the break when a goal mouth scramble saw Bird pass the ball back to the edge of the area only for Lauren Townsend to fire straight into the grateful arms of Devoti.
On 58 minutes Cardiff eventually took the lead when a delicate pass from Miller found Bird out on the right. She swung the ball straight into the path of the oncoming Marie Barrow who hammered it home from close range.
The goal had blown the wind out of Rangers’ sails and from that point they were unable to get a foothold on the game. Cardiff were rampant and within minutes Cousins sent in a corner which Ellie Davies struck sweetly only for Devoti to tip the effort over the bar.
Intelligent play between Miller and Davies in the midfield set up Townsend for a long range shot which flew just over the bar.
With fifteen minutes remaining Cardiff Manager, Michele Adams, substituted Bird for Ellie Smith and within a few minutes Harding was unlucky not to double their lead when her goal was ruled offside.
Another change shortly afterwards saw Rachel Griffiths make her debut in senior football, replacing the hard working midfielder Davies, and five minutes before the end Lea made way for Lindsey Davies.
In the last minute Cardiff were rewarded for their persistence when another long range shot from Townsend crashed off the crossbar, and the rebound fell nicely into the path of the grateful Barrow who pounced to tap in her second.
Adams said, after the game, “We were well worth our win. We have put together some good results lately and have now only lost one league game in seven, we are starting to move the right way up the table.”
Cardiff play QPR again next Sunday in the reverse fixture at the International Sports Stadium, Leckwith. Kick off is 2.00pm.
