News Report
Cardiff City v Queens Park Rangers
(12th Oct 2009 08:48 PM)
Article by:
Zoe Mendham
On the back of last weeks’ excellent win to mid table Queens Park Rangers, Cardiff City Ladies did the double by winning 2-1. Although this was not the same fluent and entertaining game as the previous week, they pulled out all the stops to take another three points and move passed QPR and take up 6th place in the league.
Cardiff had the best of the opening chances when both strikers, Zoe Atkins and Lisa Bird, were on target, making the Rangers goalkeeper, Jess Devoti, pull off two very good saves.
The visitors then had a good chance from a corner when Tammy Scrivens rose above the Cardiff defence to head just wide of the mark.
A delightful cross field pass by Cardiffs’ Danielle Broadhurst picked out the advancing run of Tash Harding who laid a perfectly weighted pass to Atkins but her shot went narrowly wide.
This was followed by a deep cross to the far post by Amie Lea who found Terri Beddows, but she guided her header just wide of the post.
The break through came on 25 minutes when Cardiff were awarded a corner. Harding sent the ball deep into the box and Nicola Cousins hit a shot through a melee of players and into the back of the net.
QPR then had a good spell with Beth Curtis hitting a long range shot inches wide of the post. Then on the half hour, and following a lack of concentration in the Cardiff defence, Cherrelle Albert equalised for the visitors from a narrow angle. Neither team was able to improve on their score before the break.
An early second half substitution saw Atkins replaced by Ellie Smith as she struggling to shrug off a knock which she had picked up in the first half.
Bird then almost caught Devoti napping in the Rangers goal with a snap shot. Devoti was only able to parry the ball into the path of Harding who was unlucky to see her effort go agonisingly wide.
Cardiff then increased the pressure on the London team, with Harding trying her luck from long range, which went just wide.
In the 68th minute Cardiff took a deserved lead when Cousins kept her long range effort low and the ball nestled sweetly in the bottom right hand corner of the goal.
Bethan Lloyd then replaced Lea and instantly made a neat and inviting pass through to Harding who ran at the Rangers defence. The pace of her shot again caused Devoti more problems and she was only able to palm the ball towards the waiting Ellie Davies who was unlucky not to score from the rebound.
Cardiff’s centre midfield pairing of Captain Charlotte Miller and Davies were industrious throughout the match. Miller’s tough tackling won the ball and gave her the chance to run through the Rangers defence but she was unable to trouble Devoti with a tame left footed effort which was gratefully gathered in.
Although the home side were in control it was QPR that had the last effort when a neat chip from Albert went just passed the post.
Having lost only one game in seven league matches, Cardiff move up to sixth position, but are now without a league game for two weeks due to Welsh Cup draws and a senior international on 25th October.
