Reading v Cardiff City

Cardiff City Ladies were unable to take advantage of so much possession against 3rd placed Reading Ladies and went down 2-1 in this FA Tesco Women’s Premier League Southern Division match.
Within two minutes the visitors found themselves one up when Cardiff keeper, Rhian Nokes saved from Harriet Scott and then punted the ball up the field to Natasha Harding. She hunted down the Reading defence and found herself one on one against Reading keeper, Michelle Beasley, who made a tremendous one handed save only to see Lisa Bird pounce on the rebound and give Cardiff a very early lead.
Beasley was called on shortly after with a fine reaction save from Bird after Cardiff skipper, Charlotte Miller had done well to win the ball on the edge of the box.
A series of Cardiff corners taken by Amie Lea had Nicola Cousins and Terri Beddows threatening to breach the Reading defence again but they held firm.
After only 26 minutes, Cardiff were forced into a substitution when midfielder Ellie Davies took a heavy knock and was replaced by Ellie Smith.
Whilst Cardiff were settling into their change of formation Reading took advantage and were now going through a purple patch.
On 35 minutes Reading equalised when Fran Kirby won the ball out on the right. She sent the ball into Danielle Puddefoot who, from a narrow angle, slotted home passed Nokes.
Bird then slipped a neat pass to Sophie Ingle but, from close range blasted the ball over Beasley’s crossbar.
But it was Reading who caught the Cardiff defence napping when, on 43 minutes, the referee awarded the home team a controversial free kick out on the touch line. The ball was crossed in and Emma Pearmine converted for Reading who took a slender lead into the break.
Cardiff came out in the second half in search of an equaliser and Lea was unlucky when her long range shot was gathered well by Beasley.
Cardiff were awarded a penalty in the 70th minute when Harding drove at the heart of the defence and was brought down in the area. Although she is the regular penalty taker, she was off the field receiving treatment as Lea stepped up to take the kick. But it was the Reading keeper, Beasley, that won the plaudits as she saved Lea’s effort.
On 78 minutes Bird was replaced by Zoe Atkins and shortly afterwards an Ingle free kick was dealt with well by the Reading defence, followed by Beddows again heading just wide.
But it was Reading who had the final effort when Natasha Caswell’s free kick was tipped over the bar by Nokes, and when the final whistle was blown the home team had taken all three points and subjected the Welsh side to only their second defeat of the season.
Cardiff are without a game next Sunday due to Wales playing the Czech Republic and Azerbaijan in their World Cup qualifying matches. Cardiff players Nicola Cousins, Rhian Nokes, Sophie Dando, Lauren Townsend and Sophie Ingle travel with the squad.
Cardiff’s next league match is at the International Sports Stadium, Leckwith, on Sunday 1st November against Charlton Athletic. Kick off will be 2.00pm.
