Cardiff City v Charlton Athletic Cardiff City v Charlton Athletic (3rd Nov 2009 05:11 PM)
Article by: Zoe Mendham

Cardiff City Ladies took more advantage of the difficult conditions than their opponents Charlton Athletic, beating them 2-1 in this FA Tesco Women’s National League Premier Division Southern Division match.

However, within the first minute of kick off, Jenny Newman put Charlton ahead when she found herself unmarked in the penalty area, and slotted the ball home passed Cardiff keeper Rhian Nokes.

Despite their early goal, and having the blustery wind with them, Charlton failed to increase their lead, and Cardiff went on the search for an equaliser. From a Charlton corner, Cardiff defender Nicola Cousins burst forward and found Marie Barrow on the far left, her shot going just wide of the post.

In the 28th minute Cardiff were rewarded for their efforts when Amie Lea and Tash Harding worked well together on the right before Captain Charlotte Miller opened up the defence with a sweetly weighted pass to set up Lisa Bird, who fired an unstoppable shot passed the despairing dive of the Charlton keeper Megan Lynch to bring the scores level at half time.

Cardiff took the lead after only two minutes of the restart when a throw-in found Harding one-on-one with the oncoming visiting keeper, beating her to the high ball and bravely heading it into the unguarded net.

Within minutes Harding put Bird through on goal but this time Lynch dived at her feet and made a good save.

Shortly afterwards it was again the hard working Harding who tried to increase the Cardiff lead but saw her shot fly harmlessly over the crossbar.

On 65 minutes Bird was replaced by Zoe Atkins and Cardiff were taking a hold of the game.

Cardiff keeper, Nokes was untroubled with any Charlton attack and the Welsh girls defended resolutely for the rest of the match.

Another Cardiff substitution five minutes later saw Danielle Broadhurst make way for Ellie Smith. She was unlucky not to get on the score sheet almost immediately when Harding squared the ball perfectly to her, only to side foot her shot just wide.

With five minutes left Cardiff made their final change with Welsh International Yasmin Leung making her debut when she took over from Barrow on the left.

Having lost just 2 league games all season, Cardiff earned themselves another three points, and remain in 7th position in the league. Next Sunday they travel to third placed Portsmouth.
