Cardiff City v Portsmouth

Zoe Mendham
Cardiff City Ladies FC earned a convincing 4-1 win away to fourth placed Portsmouth who were unbeaten in the previous nine league games in the FA Tesco Women’s League Southern Division.
The opening minutes were all Portsmouth as they settled into their stride first, but the signs were there early on that the pace of the Cardiff forwards could out do the Pompey defence. The first Cardiff attack came from a Natasha Harding inch perfect pass that split the defence, and was easily picked up by Lisa Bird whose thunderous strike flew just over the bar.
Cardiff Captain, Charlotte Miller, and Sophie Ingle were dominant throughout in the heart of the midfield, and it was Ingle who opened the scoring on 23 minutes. Danielle Broadhurst floated a free kick into the six yard box and the Portsmouth defence could only clear it to Cardiff defender Terri Beddows who neatly chipped the ball back into the box. Ingle sent a looping header over Pompey keeper Louise Worsfold to give the visitors the lead.
Portsmouth were looking to get the equaliser straight away when Lucy Keil’s shot went just over the bar from just outside the box, and then Zoe Nash jinxed her way into the box and found space to get a shot on goal but again it went just over the box.
Cardiff then had their chances to double the lead when Lauren Townsend saw her long range free kick clip the top of the crossbar to go over, before Bird and Marie Barrow linked well out on the left. Barrow drove in a low cross that Ingle met perfectly but her strike went agonisingly inches wide and Cardiff took the slender lead into the break.
The Welsh girls came out as lively as they had finished the first half with Amie Lea and Bird exchanging passes, followed by a lovely cross from Broadhurst which had Barrow scrambling to connect on the far post. They were threatening to go further ahead when Portsmouth managed to equalise with a well worked goal by Nash on 53 minutes.
Cardiff Manager, Michele Adams, made changes almost immediately, with Zoe Atkins coming on to replace Lea, with the intention of cranking up the pace of the game.
Ten minutes later they took the lead when Broadhurst floated in a corner that Nicola Cousins rose above the defence to head towards goal. Keeper, Worsfold, managed to block the effort but it was Cousins who reacted quickest, firing home from close range on her second attempt.
With fifteen minutes left, Cardiff's young centre forward Lisa Bird scored an individual goal as she twisted and turned in the box and jinxed her way passed two defenders before stroking the ball past the oncoming Worsfold to give the visitors a 3-1 lead.
Cardiff put the result beyond Portsmouth’s reach when, on 83 minutes, Harding converted their fourth goal from a Townsend free kick.
After the game a delighted Adams said, "That was our most convincing win of the season against a strong Portsmouth side. It was a solid performance throughout the whole team, we were well organised today. We now have to be more consistent and carry this forward into our next game."
Next Sunday Cardiff City Ladies start the defence of their Welsh Cup title when they travel to Crannog in the Second Round of the Welsh Challenge Cup.
