News Report
Cardiff City Reserves v Crystal Palace
(10th Nov 2009 10:22 AM)
Article by:
Zoe Mendham
After earning a well earned draw home to Charlton last week, Cardiff City Ladies’ Reserves travelled to Crystal Palace for their first encounter with the London team this season, coming away with an emphatic 4-0 win.
Cardiff had a changed team due to first team call ups, illnesses and injuries. However this did not affect them as straight from the kick off, Cardiff applied pressure onto Palace and played some good football. They were rewarded with an early lead as striker Cori Williams powered her header passed the keeper.
Despite the early goal, Cardiff were suffered a set back as Rachel Griffiths twisted her knee which forced manager Deb Ball to make an early substitution. Youngster Ceri Hudson partnered Charlotte Preen in the middle, with Fern Burrage making her first appearance this season going onto the right of midfield. Despite her lack of experience, Hudson slotted into the position easily and looked strong and confident in the middle of the park.
After more pressure and some great passing by Cardiff, it wasn’t long before they doubled their lead. After a deep cross coming over, Palace could only clear to the edge of the box, where Hudson connected with the ball perfectly and unleashed a brilliant shot into the bottom corner to score her first goal at senior level.
Cardiff started the second half brightly, with some confident passing and football being played. Palace rarely threatened their defence, with goalkeeper Sophie Dando not being called into action much. This gave the opportunity for full backs Sophie Ford and Lisa to join the attack and support wingers Burrage and Gemma Lewis.
Shortly after the restart, Cardiff scored their third goal of the match, with Williams grabbing her brace. With some good build up play from the team, it resulted in a well taken volley from Williams to get her fifth goal this season.
Midway through the second half saw Keira Deeks replaced by Talia Jenkins, who was quick in on the action and caused the home defence some difficulties with her pace. Cardiff kept pressing for the fourth goal, with long range efforts from Ford, Preen and Kirsty just going marginally over.
Cardiff’s increasing pressure eventually paid off from some superb team play from the Welsh team, with Williams reacting quicker than the defender’s and smashed the ball into the corner of the net to grab a well earned hat trick.
Soon after, Williams was replaced by Libby, who made her debut for Cardiff, which saw her slot into the right of midfield, with Burrage pushing up to striker. The last stages of the game saw Crystal Palace apply some pressure but Kirsty and Kath Lovett defended strongly and kept Palace out.
A comfortable and deserved 4-0 score line at the end moves the Reserves into fourth position in the league table, and also on joint points with Brighton and Charlton above them.
