Crannog v Cardiff City Ladies

Cardiff City Ladies started the defence of their Welsh Challenge Cup title with an emphatic 10-0 away win against minnows Crannog Ladies in the Second Round. The match was played in blustery conditions on a very small, bumpy pitch overlooking the beach on the beautiful coastline of Llangrannog.
The very plucky Crannog Ladies team top the Ceridigion League, but the eight times cup holders, Cardiff don’t intend releasing the firm grip on the Welsh Cup that they have. Their intentions were evident from the kick off as Natasha Harding outpaced the right back and crossed the ball which sat up invitingly for Amie Lea, but her shot went straight into the arms of the grateful Crannog keeper.
Cardiff forwards Zoe Atkins and Lisa Bird troubled the defence with their pace and Bird tried her luck early on, shooting just wide of the upright.
Cardiff opened the scoring on thirteen minutes when a free kick was miss hit and the pacey Harding nipped in to poke the ball home.
Five minutes later it was Nicola Cousins who doubled the score when she rose above the Crannog defence in the six yard box to power her header home from a Lea corner.
Within half an hour Harding had turned provider, crossing in for Bird to turn and fire home, before Lea set up Atkins for the fourth, with a perfect cross, heading home on the far post.
Crannog battled on in the difficult conditions but couldn’t prevent Cardiff scoring a fifth just before half time, when Bird popped in her second.
The second half was much like the first, with Cardiff commanding the play, out numbering Crannog in every department.
On 53 minutes Crannog won a free kick only to see Cardiff defender Terri Beddows win the ball. She found Sophie Ingle whose defence-splitting pass saw Atkins run from her own half and round the Crannog keeper to make it six.
Two-goal Bird was then replaced by Ellie Smith and with 60 minutes gone, Atkins made way for Rachel Cullen, who was returning after a long lay-off after dislocating her knee during a match several months ago.
Harding scored her second on 65 minutes before setting up Cullen for a goal to celebrate her return.
Cardiff’s fitness was clear for all to see as Crannog were running out of steam and had no answer to their superiority as Harding scored her hattrick in the 84th minute.
The biggest cheer of the day came when the Crannog centre forward forced Cardiff keeper, Rhian Nokes, into action in an effort to score what would have been a consolation goal, but Nokes was equal to it and pulled off a really brave save to keep a clean sheet.
Cardiff reached double figures just before the final whistle when Smith hit the bar but Harding was quickest to react to the rebound to fire home her fourth and complete the scoring.
Although the Cup holders have a strong hold on this competition, Crannog put up a brave fight and gave a plucky performance. Their hospitality was gratefully appreciated by Cardiff who had a long trip home afterwards.
