News Report
Cardiff City v West Ham United
(25th Nov 2009 09:48 AM)
Article by:
Zoe Mendham
Cardiff City Ladies missed their chance to move closer to the top of the FA Tesco Women’s Premier League Southern Division when they went down 3-2 in a close encounter with third placed West Ham on a pitch that looked more like the River Thames because of all the recent rain.
The match was doubtful because the pitch was holding water in the centre circle and in both goal mouths, but the referee deemed it playable.
Unfortunately for Cardiff City Ladies it had an immediate impact when, in the first minute, defender Terri Beddows attempted a pass back to keeper, Rhian Nokes, only to see the ball held up in a puddle. West Ham striker, Gemma Shephard was quick to pounce and slotted the ball passed Nokes to open the scoring.
It wasn’t until the 14th minute that Cardiff were able to launch their first serious attack when Amie Lea and Lisa Bird linked well before putting Tash Harding in with a sight on goal but her shot went just wide from a tight angle.
Cardiff were rocked by a second goal from the home side in the 25th minute when the defence failed to clear a West Ham corner and Becky Merritt headed home to double their lead.
Cardiff were unable to trouble the West Ham defence in the first half and it was the Hammers who were dealing with the wet conditions much better than the visitors, taking their lead into the break.
Within three minutes of the restart Cardiff were awarded a penalty when Alex Keown brought down Harding, who stepped up to reduce the deficit. An intelligent spot kick, with no run-up and a swing of the boot because of the waterlogged area, Harding placed the ball high into the net giving the keeper, Toni-Ann Wayne, no chance.
Only five minutes later it was West Ham that increased their lead from a Claire Rogers goal, despite the despairing block by defender Lauren Townsend, the ball ricochet off Nokes’ leg and into the goal.
The Cardiff players believed that they could take something from this game and continued to press West Ham. On 70 minutes it was Bird, with a deft little lay-off, which set up Marie Barrow who, from 25 yards, sent a thunderous strike passed the despairing dive of Wayne and into the back of the net, making for a nail-biting final 20 minutes.
Despite their efforts in the difficult conditions, Cardiff were unable to breach the home defence again and missed the chance to move up into fourth position.
After the game, Cardiff Manager Michele Adams said, “We improved as the game went on and it was disappointing not to take any points. Having said that, we were not as strong in some departments that we have been recently and we were punished for it.”
Cardiff’s next game is on Sunday, 6th November, when they travel to London to take on Crystal Palace. Kick off is 2.00pm.
