News Report
Cardiff U14's v Penydarren
(8th Dec 2009 09:29 AM)

At long last, on a blustery day and a difficult pitch in the capital, Cardiff City Ladies Under 14’s ran out clear winners in a combative Tesco Cup Round 2 tie against Penydarren.
The early period saw a battle for supremacy in midfield with clear chances. One early shot from Penydarren was easily saved by Lauren, who was temporary keeper in the absence of our regular keeper.
Cardiff's defence, led by Amey and Jess, looked solid and they gradually gained the upper hand, with the tie being increasingly played in the visitors' half.
Channelle broke the deadlock when her original cross from the right came back to her and she coolly returned a cross come shot which found its way into the corner.
Erin then saw a good effort fly over the bar as, buoyed by the goal, the home side piled on the pressure.
Katy added the inevitable second with a strong finish after good work by Erin on the edge of the box.
Cardiff pressure was constant now, forcing several corners, and seeing a shot from Shannon saved.
In a rare break, Penydarren were awarded a free kick out on the right wing, followed by a corner, but the home defence stood strong.
At the other end Taylor shot just wide when it seemed it must be another goal. But she wasn't to be denied and finished calmly just before half time to send the blues in three clear.
The second half began much as the first had, with a scrappy fight for ascendency in midfield. Cardiff’s temporary keeper, Lauren, came out from between the sticks to play up front and Taylor took her turn in goal.
Cardiff looked the likelier side to score and their fourth goal came when sub Casey turned in Erin's flighted free kick, with a "cheeky back heel flick".
The visitors remained committed to the cause despite almost constant Cardiff pressure. Lauren hit the side netting having rounded the keeper, and Shannon blazed over when it looked like the fifth was inevitable.
However, the goal duly arrived with Erin's beautiful lofted shot from range, giving the keeper no chance.
Cardiff continued to press until the final whistle, and thoughts of the semi-final. Coaches Sharon Champion and Craig Howells told all the girls that "they can all be very proud of their performance today."
It must be said that this was a great cup game for all supporters, with both sides giving an excellent representation of the South Wales Girls League U14s. Well done to everyone.
