Former Club Captain Takes Up Leading Role Former Club Captain Takes Up Leading Role (16th Dec 2009 10:03 AM)
Article by: Zoe Mendham

Former Cardiff City Ladies Club Captain, Laura McAllister, has been appointed as Chair of the Sports Council for Wales. Laura played for Cardiff for 12 years, only retiring when she took up her role as lecturer of politics in Liverpool University. She is still an active supporter of the club and a current Vice President. Everyone at the club would like to congratulate Laura on her appointment.

Sports Council for Wales Press Release:
Alun Ffred Jones, the Heritage Minister, has announced the appointment of Professor Laura McAllister as the Chair of the Sports Council for Wales.
She takes over from the out-going Sports Council for Wales Chair Phil Carling and becomes the first female Chair of the Council. Her term of appointment will commence on 1 February 2010 and will last for 3 years.

Alun Ffred Jones said: "I’m very pleased to appoint Laura McAllister to the post of Chair to the Sports Council for Wales. She brings with her a wealth of experience to the role from a number of different fields, including her current role as the Vice Chair of the Sports Council for Wales. I look forward to working closely with her at this important time for sport and physical activity in Wales. I would also like to thank the out-going Chair Phil Carling for his valuable contribution over the past eight years."

Laura McAllister said: "I am absolutely thrilled to be able to put something back into sport and look forward to leading Wales’s strategy for developing sport at such a crucial time. Sport is at the heart of the Welsh nation and Welsh people are more passionate about sport than virtually anywhere. I will be doing my utmost to encourage more children and adults to become active, whilst also ensuring that we continue to punch above our weight on the international sporting stage."

Huw Jones, the Chief Executive of the Sports Council for Wales, said: "We are delighted with this announcement. Her appointment offers a degree of valuable continuity, and we’re sure to benefit from her vision, experience and knowledge of the sporting, and wider public sector in Wales. Laura is enormously respected by our Senior Management Team, and Sports Council Board members and we’re very much looking forward to working with her in this new capacity."

Professor Laura McAllister comes from Bridgend and is Professor of Governance at the University of Liverpool’s School of Management. She was educated at Bryntirion Comprehensive School, Bridgend and is a graduate of the London School of Economics and Cardiff University where she completed a PhD in politics.

Laura was a member of the Richard Commission on the Powers and Electoral Arrangements for National Assembly for Wales that reported in March 2004. Laura’s principal academic interests centre on public administration and politics, specifically: devolution, Welsh politics and elections, multi level governance, gender and politics, and sport and public policy. She has written extensively on these areas and her recent books include Plaid Cymru, The Emergence of a Political Party (2001), Women, Politics and Constitutional Change (2007), and a future biography of Lord Dafydd Elis Thomas, Presiding Officer at the National Assembly. She is visiting Professor at Cardiff University, the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia and the China National School of Administration, Beijing. Laura has worked as a political analyst for BBC Wales and commentates on Welsh and British elections.

Laura is a former Wales football international and national team captain with 24 caps. She was captain of Cardiff City Ladies FC and a Board Member of UK Sport from 2002-5. She has been a member of the Sports Council for Wales since April 2006 and was appointed Vice Chair of the Council in March 2007. Laura is also a Director and Board Member of the Welsh Football Trust. She is currently academic sponsor for sport at the University of Liverpool, and chairs the Sport Liverpool Strategy Group. She holds no other Ministerial public appointments.
