News Report
Cardiff City v Caernarfon Town
(19th Jan 2010 01:54 PM)

Zoe Mendham
Cardiff City Ladies FC were at last back in action at the weekend with a convincing 5-0 win over Caernarfon Town, in defence of their strangle-hold on the Welsh Challenge Cup title.
Cardiff were in command from the kick off with the two wide players, Amie Lea and Marie Barrow, finding plenty of space and time to send in tempting crosses but the first clear cut chance came from a corner when Zoe Atkins fired her shot straight into the arms of the Caernarfon keeper, Elena Julio.
The eight times cup holders opened the scoring on 12 minutes when the home side failed to clear from a corner and Cardiff captain, Charlotte Miller lingering on the edge of the box hammered the ball into the back of the net.
This was followed by near misses on the Caernarfon goal from Terri Beddows and Barrow, who was put through by a pinpoint pass from midfielder Nicola Cousins, only to see her shot pass narrowly wide of the post.
An excellent finger tip save from Julio denied Natasha Harding when she whipped in a free kick from just outside the box, which was destined for the top corner.
Harding was then denied by the woodwork after Cousins had sent another inch perfect pass 30 yards across the field to put her through on goal.
Caernarfon’s defence was breached again only five minutes before the break when defender, Lauren Townsend made a purposeful run down the left and deliberately chipped the keeper with a cheeky curling shot from out wide.
The home side were grateful to hear the half time whistle as Cardiff were restricting them to only half chances.
But it was the visitors who came out stronger when the game recommenced. Harding and Zoe Atkins linked well for Atkins to slot home their third on 50 minutes, followed by the inevitable goal from Harding herself five minutes later when she found herself one on one with Julio, determined not to miss on this occasion.
By now Caernarfon were deflated and Cardiff were relentless with their attacking football, although they were looking a little rusty in front of goal after a two month lay-off from competitive games.
Despite that, the 77th minute saw Ellie Smith score her first senior goal for Cardiff when she slotted home from close range to finish off the scoring and a 5-0 win made the long trip home from North Wales that little bit easier.
Next Sunday Cardiff play the long-awaited Tesco FA Cup match against Havant & Waterlooville Ladies, but please note that the fixture has been reversed to Cardiff with a kick off of 2.00pm at the International Sports Stadium, Leckwith.
