Cardiff City v Havant & W'ville Cardiff City v Havant & W'ville (26th Jan 2010 01:20 PM)
Article by: Zoe Mendham

Cardiff City Ladies went out of the Womens FA Cup in a frustrating manner, losing 2-1 to Havant and Waterlooville at Cardiff International Sports Stadium.

Cardiff were made to pay dearly for a hatful of squandered chances early on in the game as the South West Combination side snatched victory with an injury time goal as Havant and Waterlooville came from behind to seal an away tie against Premier League side Doncaster Rovers Belles in the fourth round.

As early as the opening minute Cardiff mounted pressure on the Havant defence as Natasha Harding fired just wide of the mark. Five minutes later Lauren Townsend put Harding through with a pin point 30yard cross field ball only for Harding again watch as her effort bobbled past the post. Minutes later Zoe Atkins burst through but again narrowly missed the target.

Havant’s first threat came from a Charley Wilson driving shot across the face of goal that was cleared by the Cardiff defence.

Havant goalkeeper Sadie Blakely saved well from a Harding corner, and midfielder Sophie Ingle landed a 30 yard free kick onto the roof of the net with Blakely beaten, just before Cardiff took the lead on 35 minutes when Harding sent over a perfect corner kick for defender Terri Beddows to rise and powerfully head home.

In a game that had all the thrilling cup tie ingredients Havant equalised six minutes later when Lizzie Laws stepped up to fire home a free kick over the wall and Cardiff keeper Rhian Nokes.

After the break, Cardiff stepped up the pace to press Havant back. Danielle Broadhurst went close with a neat chip from far out, and Lisa Bird on as a substitute for Atkins cleverly turned the Havant defence and with a half volley fired inches over the crossbar.

Nokes had to make a smart save from Havant’s Chloe Ranger. But it was all Cardiff as they pressed for the winner, Marie Barrow went close, Harding who was a threat all game headed over the bar and saw her rasping shot well saved by Blakely.

The match appeared to be heading for extra time as Havant’s defence snuffed out Cardiff, but the match was destined for a dramatic finish and it came when Wilson, from six yards, toe poked the ball which had rebounded from a blocked clearance and the ball trickled over the line in the third minute of injury time to seal a memorable victory for the visitors.

After the game Cardiff Coach Michele Adams said “This had all the football clichés you could think of like the cup is a great leveller, they rode their luck, and it was never going to be our day. But the bottom line is we didn’t take our chances, they defended very well, and got the winner right at the end, we wish them every success in the next round”.
